Is Bill Belichick the best football coach ever?
Many people seem to think so. Many have said that as if it is fact. But, is it really? Consider this…
Yes, his teams won 6 Super Bowls and the New England Patriots were dominant for many years while he was coaching there. If you look only at that, it does seem like a given.
However, if you check his record in games where Tom Brady was not his starting QB it was 84-103. That record does not suggest he was the greatest NFL coach ever. It is actually a pretty weak record.
And those 6 Super Bowl victories? Tom Brady was his starting QB for all.
Sure, give him some credit for the development of Tom Brady. But remember that after Brady left the Patriots they had very little success even though Belichick was still the head coach. Brady went to Tampa Bay and had good success, including another Super Bowl victory. So, do those 6 Super Bowls provide evidence the Belichick was the best NFL coach ever, or that his teams were being led by the QB that most argue was the GOAT.
By comparison, John Madden never had a losing season in his 10 year coaching career with 3 different starting QBs. He did have only 1 Super Bowl victory.
Don Shula had only 2 losing seasons across a 33 year career with many different starting QBs. Most of the games were started by one of five different QBs, but his teams had a winning record with the various other starting QBs as well. He has 2 Super Bowl victories.
Joe Gibbs overall NFL coaching record was 171-101. His record includes 3 Super Bowl victories, with 3 different starting QBs.
So, if your measuring stick is simply the number of Super Bowl victories, Belichick is clearly the best of all. But, given his record when Tom Brady was not his staring QB, was his coaching the main reason for his 6 Super Bowl victories? Some of those other coaches had very impressive records that were not dependent on a single QB.
If you believe Belichick is the greatest NFL coach of all time, you are entitled to your opinion. Because of his record with Tom Brady as the starting QB, that is a valid opinion. But this is to suggest that it isn’t nearly as definite as some might suggest.
