Quick question for you: how many bottles are living on the edge of your tub or shower floor right now? 😄

If the answer is "more than I'd like to admit," you're in good company. A built-in shower niche is one of the small details people thank us for most after a remodel, and a little planning makes a big difference. Measure your tallest shampoo bottle before the niche gets framed, because a lot of standard niches are just a hair too short for the big pump bottles. And whenever possible, we put the niche on an interior wall. An outside wall is where your insulation lives, and cutting a pocket into it can leave a cold spot that collects condensation once Middle Tennessee winters set in.

One more tip: placing the niche on the wall you face when you walk in, rather than right under the showerhead, keeps it from turning into a soap-scum waterfall. Planning a new shower and want help with the layout? We'll come out for a free in-home design consultation and estimate. Call or text 615-270-1820.

Here's something we get asked on just about every tub-to-shower consult: "If I tear out the tub, am I going to hurt my resale value?"

The honest answer is, it depends on whether it's your only tub. Families with little ones usually want at least one bathtub somewhere in the house for bath time, so if you've got a hall bath with a tub, turning the primary bath into a big walk-in shower is usually a plus, not a minus. Plenty of buyers around Hendersonville and Gallatin see that roomy walk-in and picture themselves using it every single morning. Where we'd slow down is if the tub you want to remove is the only one in the home.

So before you pick tile, take a quick count: how many tubs do you have, and how many actually get used? We're happy to talk through what makes sense for your house at a free in-home design consultation and estimate. Call or text 615-270-1820.

Quick question for you: do you ever do your makeup or shave in a different room because the bathroom light is just that bad?

We hear it on consults around Hendersonville and Goodlettsville all the time. A lot of bathrooms have one light fixture mounted right above the mirror, or a single can light in the ceiling. Light coming straight down puts shadows under your eyes and chin, which is exactly where you're trying to see.

The fix we recommend most is lighting from the sides. A pair of sconces on either side of the mirror, mounted roughly at eye level, lights your face evenly from both directions. Add a warm-white bulb (somewhere around 2700K to 3000K) so you don't look like you're standing in a gas station, and maybe a dimmer for those early mornings before coffee. It's a small change that makes a bathroom feel completely different.

If you're planning a remodel and want to see what would work in your space, we'll come out for a free in-home design consultation and estimate. Call or text 615-270-1820. So where do you actually get ready in the morning? Tell us below.

Here's something folks don't always realize: grout isn't waterproof. It's actually a little like a sponge.

Water soaks into it every shower and dries back out, and that's fine as long as the shower was built right underneath. Where trouble starts is the corners. Anywhere two walls meet, or the wall meets the tub or the shower floor, should have flexible caulk, not grout. Houses move a little as the seasons change, and grout in a corner cracks. Once it cracks, water gets a straight shot behind the tile.

So here's a quick check for this week: run your fingernail along the inside corners and the bottom edge of your shower. If the caulk is cracked, peeling, or has black spots you can't scrub off, it's time to cut it out and redo it. If you press on a tile and it feels soft or sounds hollow, that's a sign water's already been getting back there, and it's worth having someone take a look before it spreads. When's the last time anybody re-caulked your shower? Be honest.

Here's a conversation we have on a lot of consults this time of year: "Mom and Dad are coming for the holidays, and I'm a little nervous about them getting in and out of our tub."

The first thing most people picture is a chrome hospital rail bolted to the wall, and nobody wants that. But grab bars have come a long way. A lot of them now double as a towel bar, a shower shelf, or a toilet paper holder, and they come in the same finishes as your faucet, so they just look like part of the bathroom. The important part is what's behind them: a real grab bar has to be anchored into solid backing, not just drywall. The suction-cup kind isn't meant to hold someone's weight.

Pair that with a low-threshold shower and a handheld sprayer, and the bathroom works just as well for the grandkids as it does for the grandparents. Anybody else hosting family this year? Tell us how many are coming.

Here's one that catches Middle Tennessee homeowners off guard every fall: the first chilly morning you step out of a warm shower onto a tile floor that feels like it just came out of the fridge.

If you're planning a bathroom remodel, this is the easiest time to fix that for good. A heated floor is usually a thin electric mat laid right under the tile, so it doesn't raise the floor much at all. It runs off its own programmable thermostat, which means you can set it to warm up about half an hour before your alarm goes off and shut itself off once everybody's out the door. Folks around Hendersonville and Gallatin who add one tell us it's the thing they'd never give up.

The catch is it has to go in while the floor's torn up, so it's worth deciding before the tile goes down, not after. Curious if it'd work in your bathroom? We'll come out for a free in-home design consultation and estimate. Call or text 615-270-1820.
