A client once showed me a five year plan he was really proud of. I asked him one question about it: what are you doing in the next 90 days to get there?
He couldn't answer.
That's the real issue with five year visions. They sound ambitious, but they quietly let you off the hook. Nothing has to happen this month if the deadline is years away.
One year and three year visions are different. They're close enough that you actually have to move.
So skip the five year plan. Sit down, get honest, and decide exactly what you want your business to achieve in one year and in three. Doesn't matter the size of your business, this works the same either way.
