From finance to frozen treats, Justin Udom turned one bold idea into a growing Hawaiʻi-made brand.

Since launching Pop Culture Artisan Pops in 2020, Justin has grown the business from farmers markets to distribution at about 25 locations, while continuing to create chef-crafted pops inspired by local flavors.

Along the way, Hawaiʻi SBDC supported Justin with business planning, wholesale strategy, financial guidance, funding preparation, and more.

Pop Culture has also partnered with Girl Scouts of Hawaiʻi through the Cookie Boss initiative, helping celebrate youth entrepreneurship, leadership, and real-world business skills.

We’re proud to support entrepreneurs like Justin as they turn bold ideas into stronger businesses and meaningful community impact.

From deckhand to business owner. 🎣

After more than 10 years working in Hawaiʻi’s charter fishing industry, Dustin “Dusty” Slagill was ready to take the next step and launch Reel Havoc Sportfishing in Kona.

Through one-on-one advising with Hawaiʻi SBDC, Dusty received support with financial projections, loan readiness, lender matching, and strategic planning to help turn years of industry experience into a business of his own.

Today, Reel Havoc Sportfishing is focused on providing memorable charter experiences while building a business rooted in professionalism, customer service, and respect for Hawaiʻi’s ocean resources.

Dusty’s story is a reminder that having the experience and vision is only part of the journey. The right planning and support can help turn that vision into something real.

TAX UPDATE TO WATCH

A new proposal in Congress could affect how states determine tax obligations for remote sellers and small businesses.

The Business Activity Tax Simplification Act, also known as BATSA, would restore a physical presence test for certain state tax requirements. If passed, businesses may need to be physically present in a state for 15 or more days before being subject to that state’s income or sales tax.

For small businesses in Hawaiʻi, this is an important topic to watch as online sales, mainland purchases, and interstate business activity continue to evolve.

As always, business owners should consult a qualified tax professional for guidance specific to their situation.
