South Carolina just made national news for something in your water. 💧

80,000+ acres of SC farmland have been fertilized with sludge containing PFAS ("forever chemicals") since the 1990s. Two-thirds of the rivers DHEC tested came back over the safe limit.

Our local utility, BJWSA, already had PFOS/PFOA samples hit that same limit — back in January 2025.

No smell. No taste. No color. SC doesn't even require compliance until 2029.

When you have hard water, you likely have soap scum built up in your shower. mold LOVES to grow on soap scum!!

When you have a water softener, you have less build up, making it easier to keep your showers clean and keeps mold from building up!!

This is the single most common thing we correct in Bluffton kitchens.

Standard activated-carbon pitchers are built for chlorine taste and odor. That is what they are certified for, and they do it well.

PFAS removal takes a different mechanism: reverse osmosis, or carbon specifically certified to NSF/ANSI 53 and 58 for PFOA and PFOS reduction.

The word 'filter' on a box is not a claim about PFAS. The certification number is.

The most common question we get in Bluffton: 'If it's in the water, isn't that the utility's problem?'

Partly. Here's the honest version.

PFAS enters the Savannah River watershed upstream - industrial discharge, firefighting foam, decades of consumer products. BJWSA treats what arrives. But standard municipal treatment was never designed to remove forever chemicals. That's the entire reason they're called forever chemicals.

This isn't negligence. It's a technology gap. and the deadline to close it is 2029.

1. Stubborn white film on your shower door and fixtures that require serious elbow grease
2. Soap that will not lather no matter how much you use.

Got all three? You're likely above 10 grains per gallon. That's normal for Hardeeville and Beaufort. It's also hard on your major appliances, and can cause more expensive issues down the road😶
