Congratulations to Our Critical Thinking Academy Graduates!

Northwest Volunteer Fire Department is proud to recognize Firefighter Deysi Benitez, Captain Rory Daigre, and Captain Jeff Foster for successfully completing the International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC) Volunteer & Combination Officers Section (VCOS) Critical Thinking Academy.

The Critical Thinking Academy is an intensive leadership-development program designed specifically for the unique challenges facing volunteer and combination fire departments. Over the course of the program, participants develop skills in critical thinking, problem-solving, decision-making, leadership, collaboration, and addressing complex organizational challenges.

Completion of this program represents a significant commitment of time and effort beyond their regular duties. More importantly, the knowledge and perspectives they bring back strengthen not only their own leadership abilities, but our entire organization.

Investing in our people is one of the best investments we can make. As our department continues to grow and evolve, developing leaders who can think critically, challenge assumptions, solve difficult problems, and make sound decisions will help ensure we continue providing the highest level of service to our community.

Today marks a historic day for the Northwest Volunteer Fire Department.

After years of planning, hard work, and unwavering support, we are proud to announce that our new Fire Training Facility is officially complete.

This project would not have been possible without the vision, commitment, and investment of the Harris County Emergency Services District No. 20 Board of Commissioners. They recognized that providing exceptional emergency services begins long before the tones ever drop—it begins with realistic, high-quality training. Their dedication to investing in our firefighters is truly an investment in the safety of every resident, business, and visitor we are privileged to serve.

This facility was built for one purpose: preparing our firefighters to perform at their very best on someone’s worst day.

Inside these walls, our members will train in live-fire conditions, search and rescue operations, officer development, technical rescue, ventilation, hose deployment, confined space emergencies, and countless other skills that cannot be fully replicated in a classroom. Every evolution completed here will build confidence, sharpen decision-making, and strengthen teamwork in a safe, controlled environment before those skills are needed during a real emergency.

Training is never about checking a box—it is about creating muscle memory, building competent leaders, and ensuring our firefighters are ready to protect lives and property when seconds matter most.

This facility is more than a building. It is a promise to our community that we will never stop learning, improving, and preparing. It is an investment that will serve our department for decades, allowing generations of firefighters to develop the knowledge, skills, and experience necessary to meet the ever-changing challenges of the fire service.

To the Harris County ESD No. 20 Board of Commissioners—thank you for believing in this vision and making it a reality. Your leadership has provided our firefighters with a resource that will strengthen emergency response, improve firefighter safety, and enhance the level of service we provide to our community for many years to come.

Strong partnerships make stronger communities.

We were honored to help our friends at Harris County ESD 17 - Little York Fire Department by providing firefighter boots for their upcoming Camp Ignite program. Investing in the next generation of firefighters is something we’re proud to support, and we’re excited to see future first responders get hands-on experience while learning about the fire service.

Little York Fire Department is one of our closest partners and our largest mutual aid provider for structure fires. Time and time again, their firefighters are there alongside ours when our community needs us most. That’s what the fire service is all about—working together, supporting one another, and ensuring our communities receive the very best service possible.

We wish everyone involved in Camp Ignite a safe, successful, and unforgettable week. Thank you to Little York Fire Department for your continued partnership and for inspiring the next generation of firefighters. We can’t wait to see all the great things this year’s campers accomplish!

Not every call we respond to is routine, and some require specialized technical rescue skills that aren’t used every day. That’s why we train.

These past few weeks, our crews spent time sharpening their rope rescue skills by practicing knots, rigging systems, and other technical rescue techniques. These hands-on training sessions help ensure that when someone needs us in a challenging environment, our firefighters can perform safely, efficiently, and with confidence.

Training doesn’t stop when the classroom ends. We continually invest in our people so they’re prepared for the emergencies our community hopes never happen—but can count on us to handle if they do.

Sometimes the calls don’t come through 9-1-1… they walk right through our front door!

This weekend, Station 44 A Shift had a community member stop by needing assistance after a ring became stuck on their finger.

Fortunately, Captain Daigre came prepared with his trusty ring removal toolkit. After a little patience and some careful work, the ring was safely removed, bringing immediate relief to our visitor.

While emergencies are what we’re known for, serving our community goes far beyond responding to fires and medical calls. Whether it’s a major emergency or a helping hand with life’s unexpected situations, we’re always proud to be here for those we serve

A huge THANK YOU to Gringo’s Champions for stopping by Station 42 today with chips and queso for our firefighters!

It’s always appreciated when members of our community and local businesses take the time to support the men and women who serve Northwest. Gestures like this go a long way in boosting morale and reminding our crews that the community stands behind them.

We are incredibly grateful to Gringo’s Tex-Mex for their generosity and continued community support. Partnerships like these are what make our community so special.

Northwest Volunteer Fire Department is proud to recognize Captain McGrough, Firefighter Baldwin, Firefighter Ortiz, and Firefighter Bonn for successfully completing the Texas Fire Chiefs Association Company Officer Academy.

The Company Officer Academy is designed to prepare current and future fire service leaders with the skills needed to effectively lead personnel both on emergency scenes and in the fire station. Through instruction in leadership, communication, decision-making, accountability, conflict resolution, and crew development, participants gain valuable tools that strengthen their ability to serve both their fellow firefighters and the community.

Investing in leadership development is essential to building a strong organization. We are committed to providing our personnel with opportunities to grow professionally so they are prepared to meet the challenges of today’s fire service and lead tomorrow’s firefighters.

Captain Foster and Captain Valls recently attended the National Fire Academy’s Fire and Emergency Services Training Program Management course.

This nationally recognized program equips fire service training leaders with advanced knowledge in developing, managing, and evaluating comprehensive training programs. Topics include strategic planning, instructor and personnel management, training records, budgeting, scheduling, and ensuring that training programs effectively prepare firefighters and EMS personnel for today’s challenges.

Our commitment to continuous improvement doesn’t stop on the fireground. By investing in our Training Division, we’re investing in every member of our department—and ultimately providing a higher level of service to the community we proudly serve.

🇺🇸 Happy 250th Independence Day! 🇺🇸

Today, we celebrate 250 years of freedom, unity, and the American spirit. As you enjoy time with family and friends, the members of the Northwest Volunteer Fire Department wish everyone a safe and happy Fourth of July!

To help keep our community safe, we have additional firefighters, EMS personnel, and command staff on duty throughout the day and night, ready to respond whenever and wherever we’re needed.

If you’re celebrating with fireworks, please do so responsibly, stay aware of your surroundings, and remember that safety comes first.
