A heartbreaking situation turned into a story of hope thanks to our own Fire Chief Tyler Shirley and Assistant Fire Chief Richard Austin, who stepped up to help rescue a dog and several cats that had been dumped from the McKay Bridge over Lake Houston.

This sweet dog was incredibly lucky to survive, and the compassion, courage, and quick actions of these two fire chiefs along with others helped give him and multiple cats a second chance at life. 🐶❤️

Thank you, Chief Shirley and Chief Austin for showing that every life matters. Your bravery and compassion are what being a true hero is all about.

Please remember: animals depend on us to protect them. If you can’t care for a pet, there are humane options—never abandon them.

🙏🐾 Thank you to everyone who helped save these amazing animals!

A dog rescued from a remote concrete island beneath the McKay Bridge in Huffman is recovering after weeks of being stranded, while animal rescuers say at least nine abandoned cats have also been saved and are urging law enforcement to investigate who is dumping pets in the area.

Huffman Fire Department proudly hosted one of the area's pioneering donor flag-raising ceremonies, highlighting the impact of organ, eye, and tissue donation. This significant milestone showcases our department's commitment to recognizing the profound importance of donation. We were honored to have regional partners, including Crosby EMS Chief Gerardo Gonzales, Medical Director Dr. Steven Ellerbe, members of the ESD #4 Board, and LifeGift, join us in this meaningful event. Our firefighters, EMS personnel, and community members came together to honor the donors and their families. By hosting this ceremony, we aim to not only pay tribute to the donors but also to inspire other fire and EMS agencies to follow suit. We are proud to play a part in this impactful initiative and look forward to continuing our support.
