We can all breathe a sigh of relief after todays final tale! Though the lessons hopefully remain.

A customer found a partially completed form containing another person’s account information in a parking lot. Before the business could recover it, photographs of the document were shared online.

The company received angry calls, negative reviews, and requests from customers to close their accounts.

Because there was no documented destruction process, the business could not explain where the paper came from or whether other records were missing.

The lesson: A controlled chain of custody and documented destruction process help protect confidential information and customer trust.

We are always here to help you if these tales cause you to feel terror!

A company kept postponing its records purge. One box became five, and five eventually filled an entire storage room.

When the business suddenly needed the space, employees rushed through the cleanup. Confidential documents were mixed with ordinary recycling and discovered after leaving the property.

The company had to investigate the incident, hire legal help, notify affected customers, and review years of poorly organized files to determine what had been exposed.

The lesson: Regular purges reduce stored paper and prevent rushed decisions during cleanouts.

Absolutely SPINE CHILLING to think about this one!

During an office move, employees packed confidential customer records into unmarked boxes. One box was accidentally left beside the building’s recycling area.
By the time someone noticed, several files were missing.

Customers had to be notified, the company received complaints, and employees spent weeks determining exactly what information had disappeared. Legal and investigation costs added to the expense of the move.

The lesson: Office moves, renovations, and cleanouts require a secure plan for handling confidential records.

For today's tale we dive into the terror of letting down current and former employees!

An old filing cabinet contained job applications, payroll records, and copies of identification belonging to former employees. No one had reviewed the cabinet in years.

During an office cleanout, the entire cabinet was discarded without anyone checking the drawers. Someone later found the files, and one former employee reported that fraudulent accounts had been opened in their name.

The business had to notify former employees, offer credit monitoring, and explain why records that should have been reviewed were left unsecured.

The lesson: Forgotten records can still create serious risks. Include filing cabinets and storage areas in routine records reviews.

Today we share a terrifying tale of unsecure material! The horror!!!!

Employees placed payroll records, customer forms, and internal documents in an open cardboard box marked “To Shred.” The box sat in a shared area that employees, visitors, and vendors could access.
Several files disappeared. Information from one employee’s payroll form was later used in an attempted identity theft scheme.
The company had to investigate everyone who entered the area, assist the affected employee, and review its document-handling procedures.

The lesson: Locked shred containers protect confidential paperwork while it waits for destruction.

Welcome to our third TALE of Terror!!!

A business relied on a small office shredder to destroy large amounts of confidential paperwork. The machine frequently jammed, overheated, and left documents in readable strips.
Employees started stacking papers beside the shredder to handle later. One evening, a cleaning contractor accidentally placed the entire pile in the trash.
The business could not recover the documents or determine who may have accessed them. Staff spent weeks investigating the loss and identifying the customers who needed to be notified.

The lesson: An office shredder may work for an occasional page, but it can create delays and unsecured piles when used for larger volumes.

Welcome to our second TALE of TERROR!!!!

Boxes of employee and customer records sat untouched for years in a back storage room. When a pipe burst, employees moved the damaged boxes outside to dry.
Loose papers scattered across the parking lot, and several documents disappeared before the mess was contained.
The company had to determine whose information had been exposed, contact affected individuals, replace damaged records, and pay for emergency cleanup and legal guidance.

The lesson: Review stored records regularly. Once documents have met their retention requirements, securely destroy them instead of allowing them to become a future liability.

Today we share our first tale of terror.

The dumpster discovery
An employee placed outdated customer records in the regular trash. The files included names, addresses, account numbers, and payment information.
Someone found the records before the dumpster was emptied and used the information to make fraudulent purchases.
The business had to investigate the incident, notify affected customers, provide credit monitoring, and respond to angry calls and negative reviews. What seemed like a quick way to clear old files became an expensive security incident.

The lesson: Confidential documents should never be placed in the trash. They should remain secure until they are properly destroyed.

October is here, and we’ve got eight spooky stories to share.

All month long, we’ll tell tales of forgotten files, paperwork left in the wrong hands, and cleanouts that didn’t go quite as planned. Each one comes with a reminder about protecting sensitive information.

Keep an eye out for story number one. The paperwork may be scarier than you think.
