Today, A & J SMITH LLC, doing business as Tech Zone Security Solutions, is owned and operated by Amber and Jason Smith. While the name and ownership are entering

a new chapter, the experience, relationships, and family legacy behind Tech Zone continue.

​More Than 25 Years in the Making

The roots of Tech Zone date back to 2000, when Bob and Lori Smith began building what would eventually become Tech-Zone Central IA Systems. As technology evolved, so did the business. What began as a local technology company grew into an experienced security systems operation serving schools, businesses, municipalities, government facilities, agricultural operations, law enforcement facilities, and other organizations. Over the years, Tech Zone expanded its capabilities in video surveillance, access control, structured cabling, network infrastructure, system design, and complex commercial installations. The work eventually extended far beyond Central Iowa, with projects completed throughout the Midwest and across the country. But the most important thing built over those years was not a list of completed projects. Long-standing relationships with customers, vendors, contractors, and industry partners became the foundation of the business—and that foundation continues today.

THE NEXT GENERATION
Carrying the Family Business Forward
In 2026, the Smith family began the next chapter of the business. As Bob and Lori prepared to transition from ownership, their son Jason and daughter-in-law Amber formed A & J SMITH LLC and began carrying the family business forward under the name Tech Zone Security Solutions. This is more than a change in company name or ownership. It is the continuation of a family business and the beginning of its next generation. Amber and Jason are building on the foundation created by Bob and Lori while developing the systems, services, and capabilities needed for the future. Bob and Lori remain important parts of the Tech Zone story. Their experience, knowledge, relationships, and guidance continue to play a valuable role as the business moves into its next chapter.

🚨 OFFICIAL ANNOUNCEMENT! 🚨

After a very competitive hiring process (which included belly rubs, treat negotiations, and an extensive squirrel surveillance test), we're excited to introduce the official mascot of Tech Zone Security Solutions... MOSHI! 🐶🧡🖤

Now, before anyone asks... no, he isn't certified to install cameras. His paws make using a screwdriver a little difficult. 😅

But when it comes to security, he understands the assignment.

Dogs have been protecting homes and families for centuries. They're loyal, always on alert, and somehow know the mail carrier is coming before anyone else. They don't just guard property—they help people feel safe. That's exactly what we want Tech Zone Security Solutions to do for our customers.

Moshi reminds us that security isn't just about cameras, alarms, or access control. It's about protecting the people, families, businesses, and memories that matter most.

So from here on out, you'll be seeing Moshi around our page helping share security tips, reminding us to lock the doors, and occasionally supervising the humans to make sure we're doing our jobs correctly. (He takes quality control very seriously... especially if treats are involved.)

📢 We're Looking for a New Home! 🏢

We have some exciting (and unexpected) news to share with our Tech Zone family!

The building we're currently operating out of has been sold, which means we'll be looking for a new location over the next month. While this wasn't in our immediate plans, we're looking at it as an opportunity to find a space that better fits our growing business.

We're reaching out to our community because you never know who might know of the perfect place!

We're looking for a property that would work well for:
🔸 Office space for day-to-day business operations
🔸 A place for our technicians to meet each morning before heading out on service calls
🔸 Secure storage for tools, inventory, and equipment
🔸 Parking for our work vehicles
🔸 Room to continue growing

While we're open to opportunities throughout Jefferson and the surrounding communities, we have a special interest in the Churdan area. This fall, two of our three children will be attending Paton-Churdan Schools through open enrollment, so relocating our office there would be a wonderful fit for both our family and our business.

If you know of an office building, small shop, warehouse, commercial building, or another property that may be available—either now or in the near future—we would truly appreciate you reaching out or tagging the owner in the comments.

📣 A New Chapter Begins...

After many years of serving Central Iowa through HomeTown Variety Inc. d/b/a Tech-Zone Central IA Systems, our family is excited to share some wonderful news.

We are officially beginning the transition of the family business to the next generation.

What started with Bob and Lori Smith's dedication, hard work, and commitment to serving their customers will now continue through A & J SMITH LLC d/b/a Tech Zone Security Solutions, owned by Jason and Amber Smith.

While you'll begin seeing a new company name, logo, and updated invoices, one thing will never change—our commitment to providing the dependable service, quality workmanship, and personal relationships you've come to expect.

Most importantly, Bob and Lori aren't going anywhere! They will continue to play an active role in the business throughout this transition, sharing their years of experience and working alongside us as we proudly carry on the family legacy.

This isn't goodbye to Tech-Zone. It's the next chapter of the same family, the same values, and the same commitment to serving our customers.

To every customer who has trusted our family over the years—thank you. Your support has made this business what it is today, and we are incredibly honored to continue serving you for many years to come.
