You don’t wait until game day to start preparing.

Lawn care is a lot like that.

Some of the work that helps next spring happens before winter ever gets here.

W**d control. Watering. Keeping the lawn healthy going into colder weather.
It’s not the part anybody gets excited about.

Practice usually wasn’t either.

Funny how often coaching lessons show up in the yard.

A few leaves on the lawn aren’t going to hurt anything.

A thick layer sitting there for a long time can.

Too many leaves can block sunlight and keep the grass wet underneath.

If they’re dry and not too heavy, mowing over them is often enough to break them up.

No need to chase every single leaf across the yard.

Two lawns right next to each other can have very different problems.

One gets more shade.

One holds more water.

One has Bermuda and the other has St. Augustine.

That’s why I like to actually look at the yard before deciding what it needs.

There isn’t one answer that works for every lawn.

A few weeks ago we were worried about lawns being too dry.

After some good rain, now it’s worth watching the areas that stay wet.

Cooler temperatures mean the ground may not dry out as quickly as it did during the summer.

If you start seeing yellow or brown areas, adding more water or fertilizer may not be the answer.

It’s worth figuring out what’s causing it first.

Don’t put the mower away just yet.

If the grass is still growing, keep mowing it.

And there’s no need to suddenly cut it really short just because cooler weather is coming.

Keep doing what you’ve been doing and let the lawn slow down as the temperatures change.

The winter w**ds you see later usually get started before you ever notice them.

That’s why fall w**d control is important.

Waiting until the yard is full of w**ds means you’re already playing catch-up.

Taking care of them at the right time can make things a lot easier later.

October is still an important month for North Texas lawns.

Our warm-season grasses are starting to slow down, but they’re still growing.

This is a good time to make sure the lawn has what it needs before colder weather gets here.

What we do in the fall can make a difference in how the lawn handles winter and comes back in the spring.

Now that we’ve had some rain, take another look at the areas of your lawn that struggled this summer.

Some may already look better.

Others may still be thin or stressed.

There are a lot of reasons one part of a lawn can struggle - watering, shade, insects, disease, soil conditions, or just a rough summer.

Before treating it, it helps to know what you’re actually dealing with.

Well, we finally got some rain. After the dry stretch we’ve had, your lawn needed it.

If your sprinklers are scheduled to run, you can probably give them a break for a while.

Once things dry out a little, take a walk around the yard and look for standing water or places where the water ran off instead of soaking in.
A heavy rain can show you a lot about how your yard drains.

For now, enjoy it. We’ve been waiting long enough.

Two houses can sit right beside each other and need completely different things.

One gets full sun.

One has a huge oak tree.

One homeowner waters twice a week.

The other has a sprinkler head that hasn't worked since April.

That's why I'm not a big believer in looking at a struggling lawn and immediately assuming I know the answer.

Sometimes the most useful thing I can do is walk the property and ask a few questions.

Every lawn has a story.
