I’d call the GarberHR Open House a success.

About 20 friends, family members and clients stopped by. We got to catch up, eat some good food, and I got to share a little of what has been going on at GarberHR.

Of course, dumb ass me barely remembered to take any pictures. Alicia was too busy entertaining everybody to think about it either. So, here are some random photos of stuff before and during setup as proof that the Open House actually happened.

Also, unexpected star of the night: my desk chair. Apparently everybody needed to sit in it and give it a test drive. If this HR thing doesn’t work out, maybe I’ll pivot into office-chair sales.

I got to share the No-Surprise Performance System™, AVIRT active violence response training, and even give a sneak peek at a couple things that aren’t quite ready for prime time yet.

There may or may not have also been some discussion about combining HR training and wh***ey.

More than anything, though, I walked away feeling incredibly encouraged and humbled.

I heard “I’m proud of you” more times than I expected. People were excited about the office, happy for me, and incredibly supportive.

A couple comments really caught me off guard.

Someone told me, “Your mom would be so proud of you.”

Then a client told me, “I don’t know where our organization would be today if you hadn’t taken on this venture.”

Yeah... those got me for a minute.

I started GarberHR in December 2020 as a side gig. In November 2024, I told Alicia I thought I wanted to do this full time.

She immediately said, “Let’s do it.”

My response was basically, “Wait... you’re supposed to talk me out of this.” ......She didn’t.

And here we are.

My sister also decided to write an embarrassingly nice post about me afterward. Thanks, Ashlin. I love you too and thanks for the support.

Thank you to everyone who stopped by, supported me, trusted GarberHR, or offered a kind word.

And especially Alicia, who apparently had more confidence in this idea than I did.

I’m not saying the full Harvest Moon has anything to do with it…

But Monday came in hot.

About 50 emails, five phone calls, a few “we need to deal with this right now” situations, and apparently everybody woke up ready to choose chaos.

Welcome to HR.

The funny part is, when everything feels urgent, that’s usually the worst time to start swinging the biggest hammer you can find.

Slow down. Ask questions. Get the facts. Figure out what actually happened. Then decide what needs to happen next.

Because sometimes the problem is serious.
Sometimes it’s complicated.

And sometimes it’s just Monday after a full moon.

Simple. Consistent. Defensible.

We remember.

Twenty-five years later, we remember those who lost their lives on September 11, 2001, the families who were forever changed, and the first responders who ran toward danger when others were trying to escape.

We honor the courage, service, and sacrifice of firefighters, law enforcement officers, EMS personnel, and the countless ordinary people who stepped forward to help.

May we never forget.

GarberHR is now offering HSI AVIRT — Active Violence Immediate Response Training.

AVIRT is an HSI training program designed to help people recognize active violence, make decisions quickly, and respond effectively when seconds matter.

Training includes:

• Situational awareness
• Active violence response strategies
• Escape, evade, and attack techniques
• Emergency bleeding control
• Immediate responder skills

I recently completed the instructor training and am beginning to roll AVIRT out through GarberHR.

It can be a strong fit for businesses, nonprofits, schools, healthcare organizations, public-facing workplaces, and other organizations that want their teams better prepared for emergencies.

GarberHR has grown quite a bit over the last year.

The new office is coming together, the work has continued to expand, and I’m at the point where I’m looking to add another organization or two this fall.

A lot of small businesses and nonprofits reach a point where HR becomes too complicated to just handle as things come up, but they still don’t need a full-time HR Director.

That’s where GarberHR fits.

The GarberHR office is getting close.

It has been about a month of moving in, assembling furniture, hanging degrees, organizing, and figuring out what still needs finished.

It is not quite the final reveal yet, but the space is almost client-ready.

GarberHR will continue to be available by appointment for small businesses, nonprofits, and managers who need practical HR support, clear guidance, and help working through real workplace issues.

I’m also thinking through a small open house once everything is fully ready. More on that soon.
