What salt season actually does to unprotected vehicle paint over a winter season: road salt (sodium chloride and calcium chloride) is hygroscopic, meaning it attracts and holds moisture against surfaces. When salt deposits sit on paint that has existing chips or micro-fractures in the clear coat, the moisture held by the salt begins an oxidation process that creates rust below the paint surface. By spring, what was a small chip in October is now a paint bubble with rust underneath that requires panel-level repair. PPF prevents salt from reaching paint surface entirely.
