Running your own HR investigation is usually a mistake. 🙃

Managers get emotionally involved.
People start comparing stories.
Someone leaves out important details.
And suddenly the whole thing turns into a confusing cl*******ck 😅

This is why HR investigations need structure, documentation, and somebody neutral asking the uncomfortable questions.

Not just “having a quick conversation.”

And no, a workplace investigation is not the time for managers to start freelancing HR decisions 🙃

By the time HR gets involved, there’s usually:
three different stories,
a group chat nobody was supposed to see,
someone suddenly “not remembering” what they said,
and one manager trying to wrap the whole thing up with:
“Can we all just move on?” 😅

Absolutely the f*ck not.

Because once complaints, harassment issues, retaliation claims, or employee disputes enter the conversation, “vibes” are no longer a strategy.

This is where businesses either handle things correctly…
or accidentally create an even bigger issue trying to avoid the first one 👀

Cannabis businesses deal with a level of HR risk most industries never have to think about 🌿

State regulations changing.
Federal law conflicting with literally everything.
Managers trying to “handle it themselves.”
Policies copied from another company that absolutely do not apply here 😅

This industry moves fast.
And unfortunately, bad HR decisions move even faster.

Because when compliance gets ignored, documentation is sloppy, or leadership starts winging it… things can go sideways real quick.

Cannabis HR is not “normal” HR.

And this is definitely not the industry to be figuring s**t out as you go.

The version of HR people picture in their head is honestly adorable 😅

Most people think this job is handbooks, onboarding, and reminding employees to finish trainings.

Meanwhile HR is sitting in meetings hearing:
“Well technically nobody SAW him say it…”
“I didn’t think we needed to document that.”
and everyone’s favorite:
“Can we just keep this internal?” 👀

Half this job is risk management.
The other half is trying to prevent people from turning small problems into full blown sh!tshows.

And somehow… there’s always at least one manager making everything harder.

And no, people usually don’t quit jobs for “no reason.” 🙄

Most of the time they quit because they’re tired of dealing with the same bullsh!t every day.

Bad communication.
Managers acting like as****es.
Rules changing depending on the employee.
Problems getting ignored until HR suddenly has to untangle the entire mess.

Then everybody acts shocked when another resignation hits the inbox 😅

“We just can’t find good people anymore.”

…sure.

Sometimes the problem isn’t hiring.
It’s what people deal with after they get there.

Client Question: “Can I change someone’s pay without notice?” 👀

Short answer… not the way most people think.

Pay changes come with rules. And more importantly, they come with expectations around communication, timing, and consistency.

Making a change without properly notifying an employee, or doing it differently than you’ve handled similar situations in the past, can create more risk than people realize.

It’s not just about whether you can make the change.
It’s about how it’s done.

Handled the right way, it’s a business decision.
Handled informally… it can turn into a much bigger issue. 🧡

A lot of laughing.
