It’s been a little rapid fire lately getting ready for the next things in the pipeline so we haven’t found a place yet for a more recent artifact, Plexi Curve. It’s just kind of hanging out on the kitchen table at the moment while it waits for a home after it’s recent duty creating a look for the Foo Fighters , Take Cover Tour, (don’t worry we’re going to swing back around to show off what went down in Rio 😉 later).

What is Plexi Curve? Why is it curved? What song was it for? Well Plexi Curve, like Plexi Topo is a series of laser cut plexiglass forms that stack on top of each other. The curve is kind of special because it actually follows the curvature of the rib structure that holds the lighting fixtures in front of the LED screen behind the band. The magic though is that it continues that curve as if it were receding back in space behind where the LED wall is. This creates the illusion that the flat LED wall is actually curved. Add some precise handheld lighting passes and shoot it with a cinema camera and voila you have Learn To Fly.

Over our kitchenette sits Slicer. What is Slicer? Well it’s a series of laser cut mirrors arranged on a 3D printed 180 degree radial form that can slice up an image into tiny slivers.

What was it used for though you ask? Well back in 2024, Baz Luhrmann was one of the honorees for the Los Angeles County Museum of Art ART+FILM Gala and we needed to create some looks that delved into his grand and opulent style while remaining abstract. He often utilizes mirrored surfaces and shiny elements so we decided to meld our know how from our Practical Effects (PFX) Boxes and essentially create a scaled up version. Instead of having the images of performers reflected and refracted we simply chose light and shot it as series of slow motion tracking shots with very shallow focus. We then layered the takes over each other to build up an ethereal yet still rectilinear form that could slowly move and transition across the super wide canvas for the gala.

Slicer as a miniature installation is quite a tantalizing object to peer into. Maybe one day we’ll make a life size version, you never know…

As you enter the studio there’s an assemblage of laser cut plexi, a sculpture of sorts sitting on a bookshelf. This object started as one of Emery’s earliest topographic sketches and it would be one of the first things cuts on our laser cutter when we first got it in 2018. The MDF prototype sculpture of that sketch sat around in the studio and moved studios at least once.

Fast forward to 2023 when we were working on creative for the Foo’s upcoming tour. One of the ideas we put forth was a look that would involve laser cut plexiglass stacks that could be brought to life with light. It got the go ahead but the question was what would it look like? What would be the form? We saw that little MDF topographic sculpture and were like what about starting with that but cut in plexiglass, program lights like we might have in the show, and shoot it macro. So we cut it. Emery banged out cues with a few moving lights in the studio and shot it from a few angles, along with some additional forms. Cut up the footage direct from the camera into looping pieces. Programmed it outdoors at Glenn Helen so it could become the new Walk for that 2023 tour that would transform into the Everything or Nothing Tour in 2024. It came out great but it was a difficult time as we were all dealing with the loss of Taylor in our own ways and all really, learning to walk again, make again.

Oh hi, box of mirrors hanging out on the shelf. Where are you from? Beck? The Night Running Tour in 2019? Oh yes the first and original prototype infinity mirror box testbed that would turn into the ECM Practical Effects Boxes, PFX for short. The PFX Box was originally conceived and created for Beck, to allow him to enter a mirrored world, but at micro scale. We basically devised a way to take your normal camera feeds, put them on a tiny screen, and bounce that light onto tiny mirrored environments that were re-captured by a tiny camera in that world, and ship it to the screens. It all lived in a computer server chassis but had no computer inside, just a precision bespoke optical installation. In the end we’d create two boxes for Beck, but go on to make others for some other people and institutions you might know. That being said the Octan LEGO minifigure remains our stand in model for all things PFX 🪞

We’re going to switch gears for a moment and show you some of the artifacts and ephemera that have collected in the studio over the last 14 years. Starting with Mr. Sun. In 2022, we got the call to work with Tears For Fears on their upcoming tour as the video designers. For that tour we shot a fair amount of looks practically and nowadays hanging above the door to our shooting space is the Mr. Sun sculpture that was used for the song, Secret World, on that tour. The sculpture took its cues from the sun that appears on the cover of the Seeds of Love album. It was sculpted by our colleague and friend Christy Heyob, gilded by Kerstin, and lit and shot by Emery. Now he guards the secret world of our shooting space and our studio.

Crunchy. Raw. Real. Three things that made Stacked Actors for the Foo Fighters 2026 Take Cover tour explode. We already alluded to the Thermal Receipt look that formed the base of this look and if you haven’t been keeping track, that’s back from 2025 for Enough Space and Have It All. You can scroll down the posts to learn more about that, but what we really want to talk about is that little extra something something. Redaction. In 2025, Emery was also running with a team of individuals from the Santa Monica Pier to the Las Vegas sign, thats about 300 miles. For this race he designed a running kit for the Redacted racing team and crew that utilized a ton of gestural hand drawn marks created with Edding 850s and Sharpie Magnum markers. These marks got scanned, garments got made, they ran through the desert, and the marks sat in folder on a computer. Fast forward to Oslo 2026, when those marks got called back up because Stacked Actors needed something real and raw. They got cut up, composed, and animated into a set of looks that could occupy the screen behind the band and expand their chaos outward across all screen surface when needed. 100s of layers and 100s of miles later we bring you the things you simply can’t fake.

What can we say Stacked Actors needed to be heavy. It was going to be camera based, so we had to design a look that could match the raucous energy on stage. For this we brought out a crunchier and grittier variant of our Thermal Receipt camera look from back in the day (you can guess which day down below). But, it felt like it needed something more to give it that extra punch. We were looking at it during tech and Kerstin turned to Emery and said, ”Maybe redaction?” Emery was like, Yes and I actually have everything for that stashed away aka stacks of images of marker strokes drawn on paper from, let’s just say an outing. It would take 100’s of layers of real hand drawn marker lines stacked up to build the looks for the song. All animated to have nervous erratic movement across the screens as it knocked out portions of the live cameras. Stacked dead markers, stacked to the rafters, and later on we show you which markers, where they came from, what they were originally from, and how this all came together for the Foo Fighters Take Cover Tour. In the meantime stay real, don’t be plastic.

Exhausted, it comes at the end; the sludge like feeling of moving and getting nowhere. Pushing through the cacophony of noise. Stuck in a feedback loop reflecting into itself. We tried to capture the quiet that can exist within the chaos of it with slow moving magnetic film gliding until it erupts into violent shaking and then returning itself to composure. All while trapped within this triptych of mirrored boxes bouncing its image back to itself again and again. We built a version of this back in 2025, when it returned to the setlist, but we’d expand on it further for 2026, to interact with the new pods on the Take Cover Tour, and add a specific IMAG treatment for it as well. The base of this piece and how it was made ties back to one much older, let’s call it a construction for now as not to spoil the surprise. We’ll show you it later this week, but those that recognize it raise your hands.
