Starting a business is exciting, but before you take that leap, it’s important to make sure your personal finances are in order!

Thank you, Ms. April Hutchins- Majors, for inviting me to speak with your class at Ridgeland High School about the importance of personal financial wellness as a foundation for entrepreneurship.

As entrepreneurs, we often focus on the business plan, registering the business, marketing, and finding clients. But we also need to take a close look at our personal finances and understand how they can impact our ability to successfully launch and sustain a business.

Financial literacy is a passion of mine. I have been wanting more opportunities to share my concept of Family First Finance with educators and discuss how we can make financial education a part of a child’s learning experience from an early age.

Well, after about three tries and the help of
Dr. Tommie Mabry, I finally received the opportunity to share my concept during a national conference for educators at the National Family Engagement Summit in Charleston, South Carolina!

To overcome the financial challenges many Americans face, financial literacy has to start in kindergarten with a three-pronged approach. Not only do we include students, but parents and educators need to be a part of the learning, too.

Sometimes, the opportunities we are passionate about take a little longer to come together, but we have to keep showing up and believing in the vision.
