Before you have a tough conversation with someone on your crew. Start with yourself.

Did you set a clear expectation?
Did they know what was expected of them?
Could you have done anything differently?

That's where the most effective construction leaders begin and it's exactly what the Construction Leadership course teaches your supervisors to do.

Training matters. But knowing what good leadership looks like and actually doing it when the pressure is on are two different things.

A lot of construction leaders were promoted because they were great at the work. Then one day they were responsible for people, conflict, accountability, delegation, and culture—with very little preparation for any of it.

That’s where coaching helps.

Good coaching gives leaders a place to slow down, think through real situations, ask better questions, and decide how they want to lead before they react.

Training gives you information.

Coaching helps you apply it.

What’s been more helpful in your career: training, coaching, or a combination of both?

Managing tasks keeps a project moving.

Leading people builds a team that keeps projects moving, even when you're not there.

The difference between the two is one of the most important leadership distinctions in construction. And it's one most supervisors were never taught.

Walking into an existing team is one of the most challenging leadership situations in construction.

The culture is already set. The dynamics are already established. And the team is watching closely to see what kind of leader just walked in the door.
How a leader handles those first weeks shapes everything that follows.

When did someone on your crew last hear from you specifically what they did well?

And why it mattered?

Recognition in construction tends to be either absent or generic. But specific, timely acknowledgment is one of the most effective and underused leadership tools available.

It costs nothing. And it changes behavior.

If you find yourself checking everything, delegating almost nothing, and staying closer to the work than you should...

You're probably not a control freak. You're probably a leader who had something go wrong and hasn't found a way to rebuild trust in their team since.

Micromanagement is a symptom.

I helps construction leaders identify the source and build the systems to move past it.

Saying something once isn't the same as communicating it.

Most construction leaders are surprised to find out how much their team missed, misunderstood, or filled in with assumption, not because the leader didn't speak up, but because clarity takes more repetition than most people expect.

When something uncertain is happening on your project, the instinct is to wait until you have answers before saying anything.

But your team isn't waiting. They're filling the silence themselves, and usually not with the best case scenario.

You don't need all the answers to communicate. You just need to say something honestly.
