Bingo, but the only way to mark a square is to come back.

At my shop the daily game is a baseball at-bat. For October it turned into a pumpkin patch.

Three pumpkins. Pick one. If it lights up, there's a treat inside. If the one next to it lights up instead, well, that's the trick.

Nobody on staff had to change anything, and it goes back to baseball by itself on November 1. Happy Halloween from Marshall.

I own Extra Innings in Marshall. Like most owners, I sign for food deliveries in the middle of a shift and don't read every line. Who has time?

So I built something that reads them for me. Burnt Pizza tracks what you pay for every item on every invoice and sends an alert when something jumps. On Monday morning you get a short email with what changed.

It already caught one on my own invoices: a case of ketchup that jumped $17.46 on one delivery.

Show your work.

If anyone is selling you anything for your restaurant, ask them to do this math in front of you: average ticket, minus food cost, minus card fees, minus whatever you're giving away. What's left per visit? Divide their monthly price by that. That's how many added guests you need.

If they give you a sales number instead, you have your answer.

Mine: $18 ticket, about $12 left, $99 a month. Just 3 added visits a week.

Estimate based on an $18 average ticket, about 30% food and beverage cost, card fees, and prize costs. Your results will vary.

Nobody likes burnt pizza.

But a burnt pizza you can see. Smell it, toss it, make another one.

The stuff that really burns you is quieter. Here's a real one from my own kitchen. Same case of ketchup we always get, same truck. $72.14 for weeks. Then on the 9/28 delivery it was $89.60. Nobody called. Next delivery it was back to normal.

You pick a word. Your name works great: TACO, PIZZA, PUB. Every visit, a regular gets one letter. One letter is rare, so the last one is the chase. Spell it and they win a surprise prize off your menu, then a new card starts.

It's a different kind of loyalty than points. People talk about the letter they're missing.

Every bar I grew up around had a dice cup behind the counter. Shake of the Day. Five of a kind and you won the pot.

So I built it. Your guest shakes the cup on their phone, slams it down, and the hand decides the prize. Two pair is a small one. Five 6s is your big one. And when they miss, the last die always seems to teeter on the edge first.
