"Home care" and "home health care" sound like the same thing. They're not, and mixing them up is one of the most common surprises families run into.

🏠 Home care (non-medical)
Help with daily life: bathing, dressing, meals, light housekeeping, errands, rides to appointments, companionship. Caregivers don't need to be nurses, and families often use it for a few hours a week or around the clock. It's usually paid privately, through long-term care insurance, or, for those who qualify, through Arizona's long-term care Medicaid program (ALTCS).

🩺 Home health care (medical)
Skilled care ordered by a doctor: nursing visits, wound care, physical or occupational therapy. It's usually short-term, often after a hospital stay, and Medicare can cover it when the person is homebound and meets the other requirements.

The short version: home health helps you recover. Home care helps you keep living at home.

Many families end up needing a bit of both, and knowing the difference makes it much easier to ask the right questions and plan the cost.

"Medicare will cover Mom's assisted living, right?"

It's one of the most common questions we hear from families, and the answer surprises a lot of people.

Medicare generally does NOT pay for assisted living rent, meals, or help with everyday tasks like bathing and dressing (what's called custodial care).

What Medicare can still do while someone lives in assisted living:
• Doctor visits and hospital care
• Prescriptions, if they have drug coverage
• Some therapy or home health services when medically needed

So how do families pay for the rest? Usually a mix of personal savings, long-term care insurance, veterans benefits, and, for those who qualify, Arizona's long-term care Medicaid program (ALTCS).
