A service call came in for a toilet that wouldn’t flush properly. I augered the toilet first—no change. Then I ran the lavatory faucet, and that’s when things got interesting: the toilet started bubbling and gurgling, but there was no water backing up through the floor drain or the mop sink. 🔧 This is where plumbing becomes more than changing parts—it becomes understanding how the entire drainage system communicates. FROM THE CLASSROOM TO THE JOB SITE — EPISODE 2 🔧📐

Before we start putting pipe in the ground, we have to understand exactly what we’re building.

In Episode 2, I’m taking my students through the process of translating the blueprint into the actual field layout — identifying fixture locations, checking measurements, walking the job, and verifying everything before installation begins.

This is the part people don’t always see. Plumbing isn’t just cutting pipe and gluing fittings. You have to be able to read the plan, understand the system, locate it in the field, measure it, verify it — then build it.

That’s what From the Classroom to the Job Site is all about: taking what we teach on paper and putting that knowledge to work in the real world.

Blueprint reading is where every successful plumbing project begins. 🔵📐 In this class, I’m teaching students how to take the information on the plans and turn it into real-world plumbing installations—understanding fixture locations, pipe sizing, routing, elevations, material takeoffs, and the overall intent of the design. Thank you to the FITI media team for capturing and highlighting the work happening inside the classroom. This is how we prepare the next generation of plumbing professionals. 🔧

FROM THE CLASSROOM TO THE JOB SITE — EPISODE 1 🔧

The classroom gives students the knowledge, but the job site is where they learn how to apply it under real-world conditions.

This video captures the moment I arrived and greeted five of my plumbing students before we began a complete residential ground rough. They didn’t come out there just to observe—they came ready to work, solve problems, support one another, and turn classroom instruction into hands-on experience.

As an instructor, there is something powerful about watching students step beyond worksheets and controlled lab exercises and begin developing the confidence, discipline, and judgment required in the plumbing industry. I’m proud of every student who showed up and accepted the challenge.

When your students tell you the knowledge you’re giving them isn’t just gold, it’s PLATINUM 😂🔥 Moments like this remind me why I love teaching the plumbing trade. After more than 26 years in the field, being able to take the experience, lessons, mistakes, and knowledge I’ve gained and pass it down to the next generation means everything to me. I don’t just want my students memorizing what to do, I want them to understand WHY they’re doing it and know how to think when they get out in the field. That’s what PipeSense is all about—real experience, real knowledge, and helping build stronger plumbing professionals. 🔧💯

The opportunity you’re praying for may already be looking for you. 🙏🏾

Being good with the tools is important—but building a real career in plumbing requires more.

Learn to communicate. Learn to read plans. Understand estimating. Build relationships. Protect your reputation. Earn certifications. Keep developing professionally. And if licensing is part of your journey, keep working toward it.

After more than 26 years in this trade, one thing has become clearer to me:

Preparation creates opportunities you can’t always see coming.

Don’t wait until the door opens to start getting ready. Become the plumber, professional, and leader who is prepared to walk through it when it does.

Do the work. Stay prepared. Keep growing—and let God handle the doors you can’t open yourself. 🙏🏾

One of the questions I get asked is, “How do plumbers replace pipes that are underneath a concrete slab?”

One answer is tunneling.

Instead of making extensive floor cuts throughout a home, plumbers can sometimes excavate beneath the foundation to access and replace underground drain piping from below. Every home is different, so the best repair method depends on the specific layout, the location of the problem, and the overall condition of the plumbing system.

This video gives you a look at a tunneling project while it’s still in progress. At this stage, the work is not complete. Final piping adjustments, testing, inspections, and backfilling are all important parts of the process before a project is finished.

One of the goals of PipeSense Consulting is to help homeowners understand what goes on behind the scenes and to give future plumbers a better appreciation for the craftsmanship that professional plumbing requires.

There is an entire world of plumbing beneath our feet that most people never get to see—and that’s exactly why I enjoy sharing it.

Some lessons are too important to fit into a single video.

In Part 1, I talked about how true mastery is built through integrity, knowledge, professionalism, sound judgment, and a commitment to continuous learning.

This is the thought I want to leave every plumber with:

Before the state recognizes you as a master, your customers, your coworkers, and your reputation already know whether you are one.

Your reputation is built one decision, one job, and one customer at a time. The title is earned through the work you do every day.

People often think becoming a master plumber is defined by one exam. While earning your license is an important milestone and something every plumber should strive for, true mastery begins long before that day. It’s built through integrity, continuous learning, quality workmanship, sound judgment, professionalism, and a genuine commitment to protecting the customer. Every job is an opportunity to build your reputation, and that’s something no license can replace. This is Part 1 of a conversation I believe every plumber—from apprentice to seasoned professional—should hear.
