When negative content appears online, the instinct is simple: remove it.

But removal isn’t always the answer.

A harmful result can be addressed in three very different ways: removal, deindexing or suppression. And choosing the wrong route can waste time, create false expectations — or even amplify the reputational damage.

❌The real question isn’t just "Can we delete it?"
✅It’s "where the problem can actually be addressed: at the source, in search results, or in the wider digital narrative."

Swipe to understand the difference — and why it matters for your online reputation.

Online privacy is no longer just about what information is available about you. It is also about how that information is interpreted.

Search engines, AI systems and digital platforms can collect signals from different sources, connect them and turn fragmented information into a broader picture of a person or a company.

The problem? That picture may include outdated, incomplete or decontextualized information — and still influence how others perceive you.

In the age of AI, protecting online privacy increasingly means understanding not only where your data appears, but what digital systems can infer and communicate from it.

And when those interpretations become visible, privacy becomes a reputation issue too.

An $18 billion settlement can address a legal dispute. But can it repair trust?🤔

Meta’s agreement over claims involving the impact of Facebook and Instagram on younger users goes far beyond its financial scale.

The case shows how quickly legal risk can become reputational risk. Once public trust is involved, the response matters as much as the crisis itself.

Meta has agreed to introduce new protections for younger users while also calling for similar standards across the industry — shifting part of the conversation from one company to the responsibilities of Big Tech as a whole.

Because crisis management is not only about what happened.

✅It is also about what you do next — and how that response shapes public perception.

Before they meet you, hire you, trust you or choose your brand, they search.

And what they find online can shape the decision before the conversation even begins.

Your digital reputation is already speaking for you.
Make sure it says the right thing.

How authentic is an online conversation?

Bots are automated accounts capable of publishing content, interacting with other profiles, and amplifying messages at a speed and scale that would be difficult for a single user to achieve.

When multiple accounts coordinate these activities, the impact can go beyond simply increasing engagement: a particular opinion can appear dominant, content can gain greater visibility, and public perception of individuals, companies, or organizations can be influenced.

For this reason, when analyzing digital reputation, it is not enough to look at what is being said online. It is also important to understand who is saying it and how the conversation is spreading.

In the first 24 hours of a reputational crisis, improvisation is the worst possible choice.

You need a clear strategy: map the source, stop the amplification, define the response, and protect the most exposed assets. Speed, yes. Impulsiveness, no.

Experience becomes truly valuable when it helps identify what tends to repeat itself.

Reputational damage can follow recurring structures, sources, and dynamics.

✅Identifying these patterns helps anticipate what could amplify an issue and where to intervene.

The AI Act introduces new rules for artificial intelligence. It also raises a new question for reputation management: what happens when artificial content looks real?

From 2 August 2026, transparency obligations under Article 50 apply to certain AI-generated or manipulated content, including deepfakes.

But identifying artificial content does not automatically prevent reputational damage. A manipulated video, image or audio can circulate rapidly, reach thousands of people and influence public perception before a correction has the same visibility.

For people and brands, this makes monitoring, verification and rapid intervention increasingly important.

The regulatory framework is changing. Reputation management must evolve with it.

✅AI is changing reputation. And the way we protect it.

Outdated content is dangerous precisely because it still looks current to a new reader.

A person or brand may have evolved, but the visible narrative has not. That gap creates reputational distortion in real time.

A private moment. A smartphone. Millions of views.

The recent case involving a partner at Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz illustrates how reputation can change in a matter of hours.

What began as a personal event quickly evolved into a broader discussion about professional judgment, workplace dynamics and leadership. According to public reports, the online exposure was followed by concrete professional consequences.

This case reminds us that digital reputation is no longer determined only by what we publish ourselves.

Photos, videos and posts shared by others can become searchable, identifiable and permanently associated with a professional identity.
