A year ago, I had a chance encounter that I never expected would turn into business.

I was out on a walk when a dog got loose and started running toward a busy street. I was able to help get the dog out of harm’s way, and an employee from a local chimney company named Colton stopped to help me secure him before he could get back into traffic.

We only talked for a few minutes afterward. He was friendly, helpful, and gave me his business card.

Then life moved on.

A year or so later, when it was time to have our chimney cleaned, I decided to try a different company Mid-Valley Chimneys & Masonry after using the same one for years.

I still had that interaction in the back of my mind.

When I called to make the appointment, they asked how I had heard about them. I told them the story and joked that, in summary, it was basically a chance encounter with one of their employees.

Then today, the person who showed up to clean our chimney looked familiar.

I asked, “Were you the guy I met that day with the dog?”

It was Colton.

And he even remembered details from the encounter.

It was a good reminder that you never really know where business can come from.

Sometimes it isn’t a sales pitch, an ad, or a carefully planned networking event.

Sometimes it’s simply being helpful, friendly, and leaving a good impression when there’s absolutely no expectation of getting anything in return.

A small interaction today might turn into an opportunity a year from now.

For the sixth straight year, I’m grateful to be working with HTC Dayton on its Giving Angels program.

When we first started working together, the person running the program had papers spread across the floor just to keep everything organized. There was so much manual work involved that taking even a day off during the busy season was difficult.

Over the years, we’ve helped HTC use technology and data to make the program much easier to manage — moving away from paper and manual entry, organizing information in one place, and giving the team a clearer picture of which agencies are participating, which children still need sponsors, and where attention is needed most.

Today, the program runs much more smoothly, and the team has the information they need without everything depending on one person manually keeping track of it all.

But the numbers on the dashboard represent something much more important.

In the past 6 years alone, Giving Angels has now helped more than 5,100 children in the Dayton area.

And right now, there’s an opportunity to be part of it.

I had a nice week meeting in person with some great people, including Lance Miller.

It’s easy to let busy schedules get in the way, but so much good comes from simply making time for a conversation face to face.

"I'm glad my wife isn't here!"

That was the first thing that came out of my mouth when it was my turn to introduce myself at a recent Springboro Chamber networking event hosted by Schmidt Auto Care.

I was amazed at the incredibly clean and organized shop and continued, "Our garage is NOT this clean!"

Fortunately, everyone laughed.

As I continued my introduction, I realized the cars in the back were actually a good visual aid for what I do.

They work on the dashboards in the cars you see behind me. I work on digital dashboards that help business leaders understand how their companies are performing.

Different kinds of dashboards, but both help you see what's going on and recognize when something needs attention and how things are going.

Thanks to Schmidt Auto Care and the Springboro Chamber for a fun networking event and a chance to see such an impressive facility!

Now its time to grab a broom and clean out our garage

Last week, I shared a post about splitting firewood and how it reminded me of public opinions on AI. Apparently, my firewood pile has more business lessons to teach me.

This weekend I was building the racks to hold the wood, and something stood out to me.

A block can be perfectly level **by itself**…
and still be wrong in relation to the other blocks.

One block can be a little too high.
Another a little too low.
And even though each one is right on its own, the full structure won’t sit correctly.

It made me think about working on a team.

Sometimes people are doing exactly what they’re supposed to be doing individually. But that doesn’t automatically mean the team is aligned.

That’s what is so challenging about leadership: sometimes everyone can be doing their part correctly, and the team can still be out of balance and miss the goal.

My grandpa taught me how to split wood with wedges and a sledgehammer.

You’d pound the wedge into the log until it finally split. Then do it again. And again. And, inevitably, you’d get a wedge stuck in the wood and have to figure out how to get the damn thing back out.

I spent hours doing it that way.

In fact, I don’t remember even knowing that log splitters existed. My grandpa didn’t use one, so neither did I.

Fast forward a few decades, and this weekend I was using a hydraulic log splitter.

As I stood there watching it do in seconds what used to take me several minutes, I started thinking about the parallels to AI.

I can imagine when the log splitter was invented that people talked about it the way we talk about AI today.

“It’s bad for the environment.”

“It’s loud and annoying to everyone around you.”

“The safety features are laughable and can easily be bypassed.”

“If people start using these things, eventually nobody will know how to split wood with an axe and wedges anymore.”

The technology may be different, but maybe the conversation isn’t.

We’ve just traded the wedges and sledgehammer for something else.

I am enjoying my first time attending the Startup Week From Launch Dayton

One of the talks I heard was from Andrew White, who creates engaging content for businesses and many others. He talked about being yourself, having fun, being authentic, and not being afraid to show some personality in your content.

It definitely resonated with me.

So maybe all these crazy videos I’ve been making throughout the years are actually a good idea. After all, a video I made 9 years ago launched my entrepreneurial journey 😂
