Urban Legend: “The Bunny Man”
The Bunny Man is a famous Northern Virginia urban legend rooted in two documented 1970 hatchet-wielding incidents in Fairfax County. Tales say an axe-carrying figure in a rabbit suit haunts the Colchester Overpass near Clifton, Virginia, popularly known as "Bunny Man Bridge".
The Real Events of 1970
*First Incident (October 19, 1970): An Air Force cadet and his fiancee sat parked in a car off Guinea Road in Fairfax when a man dressed in a white suit with long ears approached and threw a hatchet through their passenger window.
*Second Incident (October 29, 1970): A security guard confronted a man chopping at a newly constructed porch with a hatchet on a vacant house on Guinea Road.
*Police Investigation:
Fairfax County Police investigated both files, but suspects were never identified or caught.
Evolution of the Legend:
The Bridge:
Newspapers never connected the 1970 events to the Colchester Overpass, but local folklore later shifted the hauntings to the lonely railway bridge.
Escaped Asylum:
Rumors added a fictional backstory that the figure was an escaped mental asylum patient or a failed transport crash from a nearby institution
Escalation:
Over the decades, tales grew darker, evolving into campfires and internet stories about mutilated animals and murdered teenagers around Halloween.
