Forging vs. Casting: What’s the Difference?

Two processes can produce similar-looking parts. What happens inside the metal is a different story.

Forging shapes solid metal under compressive force, creating grain flow that follows the shape of the component. That can mean greater strength, fatigue resistance, and consistency.

Casting offers advantages of its own, particularly for complex shapes. But when a component has to withstand heavy loads and repeated stress, forging has a clear advantage.

What happens when the press isn't ready for the next billet?

These heated steel billets are exiting the magnetic induction furnace and dropping into a hopper because the press is temporarily unavailable.

Normally, the heated billets move directly from the furnace into the forging process. When the press is down for maintenance, the line has to have somewhere for those billets to go.

Just another look at what happens behind the scenes in a forging operation.

Die temperature matters.

During forging, the dies have to stay within the right temperature range to withstand repeated contact with extremely hot steel.

Milwaukee ForgeTech uses gas burners to help maintain die temperature during production. Keeping the dies at the right temperature helps extend die life and reduces the risk of cracking and premature repair.

There's a lot more to forging than heating a billet and pressing it into shape.

Before the forging starts, the process is already moving.

At Milwaukee ForgeTech, robotic automation helps load steel billets onto the conveyor feeding our magnetic induction furnace.

Consistent billet handling is one part of keeping a high-volume forging operation moving.

Forging doesn't end when the part comes out of the die.

After the component is forged, excess material - known as flash - is trimmed away to bring the part closer to its final shape.

Here's that process in action.

Mining doesn't leave much room for component failure.

Mining equipment operates under constant shock loading, abrasive materials, heavy loads, and some of the harshest conditions in industry.

Forged components are often selected for the strength and durability required in demanding mining applications.
