Dating apps were supposed to make finding a relationship easier.

But for a lot of singles, they’ve created the opposite experience: more matches, more conversations, more swiping… and very little that actually goes anywhere.

The apps can be useful if you’re looking for something casual, attention, or just want to meet people.

But if your goal is a serious relationship, it’s worth remembering one thing:

Dating apps are businesses.

Their success depends on people continuing to use them.

And that creates a very different incentive than helping you meet one person, delete the app, and never come back.

That doesn’t mean nobody finds love online. Plenty of people do.

But if you’ve been swiping for months or years and keep ending up in the same place, it may be time to ask whether more matches are actually getting you any closer to the relationship you want.

Someone can try very hard not to show that they want you.

Usually, they’re not nearly as subtle as they think.

Here are 6 signs they may be really attracted to you but trying not to show it:

➡️ They pay more attention to you than they need to.

They remember small details, notice changes, and seem unusually tuned in to what you’re doing or saying.

➡️ They keep creating reasons to talk to you.

The conversation could easily end, but somehow it keeps going. Another question. Another joke. Another reason to come back.

➡️ Their eyes give them away.

They look at you when they think you won’t notice or hold eye contact just a little longer than they do with everyone else.

➡️ They get noticeably more self-conscious around you.

They may fix their hair, adjust their clothes, change their posture, or suddenly become much more aware of how they’re coming across.

➡️ They flirt, then quickly tone it down.

There’s a compliment, teasing, a charged moment… and then they act casual again as if nothing happened.

➡️ They keep coming back toward you.

Even if they occasionally pull away or try to play it cool, they continue finding opportunities to talk, spend time with you, or stay connected.

No single sign proves someone wants you.

But when several of these happen together, their behavior may be saying a lot more than they are.

There’s a big difference between wanting someone and wanting their attention.

The tricky part is that they can feel almost identical in the beginning.

Here are 6 signs you may be more interested in being wanted than in the person themselves:

➡️ You want them more when they pull away.

When they’re available, you’re unsure. When they become distant, suddenly you’re much more invested.

➡️ You think more about whether they like you than whether you actually like them.

You’re tracking their interest instead of paying attention to your own.

➡️ The chase feels better than the connection.

The flirting, anticipation, and uncertainty are exciting. The actual relationship? Not nearly as much.

➡️ Your attraction fades once you know they’re interested.

Sometimes the uncertainty was creating more chemistry than the person was.

➡️ You’re focused on impressing them instead of getting to know them.

You care a lot about what they think of you, but you’re not asking enough about whether you genuinely enjoy who they are.

➡️ You want the validation more than the reality.

The texts, attention, flirting, and reassurance feel good. But when you picture actually dating them, the excitement isn’t quite the same.

I see this pattern a lot in dating.

Someone can occupy a huge amount of your attention without actually being someone you’d be happy with.

You shouldn't just be asking, “Do they like me?”

You also need to ask, “Do I actually like them?”

One of the hardest parts of matchmaking isn’t finding my clients great matches.

It’s watching them talk themselves out of a good connection before it ever gets a real chance.

I see it in a lot of different ways:

They pull away as soon as things start feeling vulnerable.

They overanalyze every interaction.

They expect certainty or perfection immediately.

They compare someone new to an ex.

Or they decide something is wrong before there’s actually enough information to know.

Most people don’t become guarded for no reason. Past relationships and disappointment can make self-protection feel smart.

But there’s a point where protecting yourself from the wrong person can also keep you from recognizing a good one.

If every possibility gets filtered through fear, even the right person can start feeling wrong.

You can be wildly attracted to someone and still know they wouldn't be good for you.

Sometimes the chemistry is real. But the reason behind it? Questionable.

Here are 6 signs you may be attracted to them for all the wrong reasons:

➡️ You want them more when they pull away.

The less available they become, the more interested you get. When they’re actually consistent with you, some of the excitement disappears.

➡️ You’re more hooked on being chosen than on who they actually are.

You spend a lot of time wondering whether they like you, but not nearly as much asking whether you genuinely like them.

➡️ Most of the attraction lives in the chase.

The uncertainty, flirting, mixed signals, and anticipation feel incredible. But when you picture an ordinary Tuesday night together? Suddenly there’s not much there.

➡️ You’re filling in a lot of blanks.

You don’t know them particularly well yet, but your brain has already built a very impressive version of them from a handful of great moments.

➡️ They check the exciting boxes, not the important ones.

They’re gorgeous. Charming. Confident. Maybe exactly your “type.” But when it comes to kindness, consistency, or whether your lives actually fit together… you’re doing a lot of overlooking.

➡️ The intensity is doing most of the work.

You feel butterflies, obsession, anticipation, and assume that must mean the connection is special. But attraction and compatibility are two very different things.

None of this means the attraction isn’t real.

It just means being incredibly drawn to someone isn’t the same thing as being a good match for them.

And unfortunately, chemistry shouldn't get the final vote.

Dating apps didn’t just give us more options. They changed what we call a “standard.”

There’s a difference between having high standards and having a very specific wish list.

Your standards should probably involve things like character, values, honesty, emotional maturity, and how someone actually treats you.

But somewhere along the way, dating got incredibly specific.

He has to be over 6 feet.
She has to look a certain way.
They need the right job, lifestyle, hobbies, aesthetic, social presence...

And when you can swipe through hundreds of people, it becomes really easy to believe there’s always someone who checks one more box.

Preferences are fine. Attraction matters.

But if a superficial preference automatically eliminates someone who could otherwise be a fantastic match, it might be worth asking:

Is that actually one of your standards, or just something you got used to filtering for?

Pulling back after flirting doesn’t always mean someone changed their mind.

Sometimes they realize they just made their interest a little too obvious… and immediately try to put the genie back in the bottle.

Here are 6 signs they may like you even though they pull back after flirting:

➡️ They get noticeably more casual right after a flirty moment.

There’s obvious chemistry, a compliment, lingering eye contact, or a little teasing, and then suddenly they’re acting like absolutely nothing happened.

➡️ They create distance…but never actually disappear.

They may back off for a minute, but they still respond. They still find reasons to talk to you. They still keep themselves somewhere in your orbit.

➡️ They watch to see what YOU do next.

After flirting, they may become less obvious and wait. Do you initiate? Flirt back? Move closer? Their next move may depend on whether they think the interest is mutual.

➡️ The flirting keeps coming back.

They pull away, things become normal again…and then another flirty moment happens. If this cycle keeps repeating, the attraction probably didn’t vanish between Tuesday and Thursday.

➡️ They seem more confident when you give them reassurance.

A compliment, some extra attention, or you initiating contact can suddenly bring the warmer version of them right back.

➡️ Their behavior around you never becomes completely neutral.

Even when they’re trying to tone things down, there’s still extra attention. Extra eye contact. Nervousness. Teasing. Little reasons to stay near you.

Of course, someone pulling back can also mean exactly what it looks like: they’re no longer interested.

But if they pull back and then repeatedly find their way back toward you, that’s a very different pattern.

Dating dealbreakers aren’t just about smoking, kids, religion, or where you want to live anymore.

For a lot of singles, worldview has become part of compatibility too.

And that makes sense.

You don’t have to agree on every issue. But if two people see the world in completely different ways, that can affect a lot more than what they talk about at dinner.

It can show up in:

➡️what kind of future they want
➡️what they’re willing to compromise
➡️and what they absolutely aren’t

As a matchmaker, I’ve watched this become a much bigger part of what people screen for before they ever agree to a first date.

The hard part is figuring out the difference between a real values mismatch and simply expecting someone to think exactly like you.

Nobody wants to make a move and find out they completely misread the situation 😅

So when someone likes you but isn’t sure you like them back, they may do a lot of waiting, testing, and very subtle flirting instead.

Here are 7 signs that might be happening:

➡️ They light up when YOU initiate.

They may hesitate to reach out first, but the second you do? Suddenly they have plenty to say.

➡️ They keep finding reasons to be around you.

Another question. Another joke. Another excuse to stay in the conversation just a little longer.

➡️ They watch your reaction when they flirt.

A compliment lands, and immediately they’re watching to see how you took it.

➡️ A little encouragement changes everything.

You compliment them, initiate plans, or give them some extra attention, and suddenly they’re much bolder.

➡️ They’re VERY curious about your dating life.

Not enough to flat-out ask if you like them, of course. That would be too easy.

➡️ They flirt... then suddenly act casual.

You move closer, they move closer. You pull back, they pull back. They may be waiting for proof that taking the next step won’t end in embarrassment.

One of these things means very little.
