Fall in our house means five teenagers, four of them in sports, and a family calendar that needs its own coordinator.

Cross country meets. Volleyball nights in the gym. Soccer on weekend mornings. Somebody always needs a ride, a clean uniform, or a snack for the bus.

None of it works with just one or two people. It takes coaches, carpools, grandparents, neighbors, co-parents, and a lot of grace when the plan falls apart at 6:45 on a Tuesday. (It does. Often.)

These kids are the people behind our numbers. They're the why behind what we do.

And we know we're not unique. Most of the families we sit down with are doing well at work and still juggling more than anyone sees. Good financial planning isn't about "doing better" for its own sake. It's about taking care of each other, helping out where we can, and loving the people who count on us.

To every parent in the bleachers and the driver's seat this fall: we see you. 🍂

Keep the house, or let it go?

For many people going through a divorce, the house is the most emotional asset on the table. It’s where the kids grew up. It feels like stability.

But a house also needs cash every month: the mortgage, property taxes, insurance, utilities, and the repairs nobody plans for. Before deciding to keep it, it helps to see what it really costs in the life you’re building next, and what you might be giving up in the settlement to keep it.

As a Certified Divorce Financial Analyst® (CDFA®), this is one of the conversations I help people think through, alongside their attorney.

New beginnings deserve a clear picture. 💚

This month’s Monroe County Magazine has a piece I wrote, and I’ll be honest with you — it was a hard one to write.

Laura’s mom died in August. Her dad is living with dementia in a nursing home in Virginia. I’ve spent my whole career helping families get ready for exactly these moments. Turns out knowing what needs to be said doesn’t make it one bit easier to say across a dinner table.

Thanksgiving is six weeks away. For a lot of families around here it’s the one weekend all year when three generations are in the same room. Somebody always notices that Mom is moving a little slower than she was last year. Almost nobody says anything.

If you’re thinking about it, a few things that have helped the families I work with:

Start with questions that aren’t about money. “If you needed help at home, who would you want making that call?” Ask where the documents are kept and who’s named — then answer those same questions for your own household, because your kids are sitting at that table too.

And don’t spring it on anybody. Give some notice. “While we’re all together, can we spend twenty minutes on the just-in-case things?”

You won’t get through all of it in one afternoon. One conversation, started gently, is enough.

Laura and I are grateful for the ones we had while there was still time. And honest about the ones we wish we’d started sooner.

Pick up the October issue if you get a chance — or message me and I’ll get you a copy.

“When you lose a spouse, the stack of forms can feel taller than the grief.”

A client said that to me recently. She came in with a folder of statements, twenty death certificates, and a wall of sticky notes keeping track of four different medications for the family dog. Anyone who has done this knows that is not an exaggeration. It is just Tuesday.

What worried her most was untangling several investment accounts while required minimum distribution deadlines were coming up.

So we went one at a time. Matched every account to its beneficiary designation. Sorted out which assets could move without triggering tax right away and which could not. Mapped the distribution deadlines, which are shorter than most people expect. Then laid out her cash flow month by month so she could see when each deposit would land.

Two things turned out better than she feared. Her mortgage, at a rate she will not see again, could stay right where it is. And the tax bill she had been bracing for was visible far enough ahead to plan around instead of absorb.

I will tell you the honest truth about this part of the work. The numbers matter, but what actually changes is that someone gets room to breathe at a moment when nothing else is giving them any.

If your own documents have not been looked at since “someday” — beneficiaries, titling, who is named on what — please do it while nobody is grieving. It is a far easier afternoon now than it is later.

I am glad to sit down and walk through it with you. Call (734) 789-6275 or email [email protected].

Here is a Social Security question almost nobody gets asked: do you have a child under 18?

The Wall Street Journal wrote last weekend about a benefit that does not get advertised. When a parent files for Social Security retirement benefits and still has a dependent child at home, that child can generally collect up to half of the parent’s full retirement age benefit — until 18, or 19 if still in high school. In some cases a grandparent raising a grandchild can qualify too.

One family in the article learned about it only because a representative on the phone happened to ask. It turned into roughly $600 a month for their children.

Here is why it matters. Most of us have heard that it pays to wait — the longer you delay, the larger your monthly check. That is still true. But if you have a child at home, filing earlier can mean years of additional payments for that child, and waiting can mean the child ages out before collecting much of anything.

There is no single right answer. It depends on how old your child is, what you expect about your own health and longevity, whether a spouse could file instead, and when your family’s big expenses land. There is also a family maximum that caps the total, so more children does not simply mean more money.

If you are getting close to claiming age and you still have children at home, or you are raising a grandchild, please do not file without running the numbers first. This is one of those decisions that is permanent.

I am glad to walk through it with you. The first step is just a conversation — no homework, nothing to bring. Call (734) 789-6275 or email [email protected] and we will find a time.
