Not every student needs the same thing tomorrow. The trick is knowing who needs what.

Collect a quick exit ticket, then sort the responses into three piles:

1️⃣ Got it — these students are ready to move on or extend
2️⃣ Almost there — one misconception is in the way, and a short reteach clears it
3️⃣ Not yet — this group needs the concept rebuilt from the ground up

The piles aren't grades. They're your small groups for tomorrow.

Fast to do, and it turns "I think they got it" into something you actually know.

Start by reframing argument for your students: the goal is not to win. It's to understand. Try this...

Tell students: A strong argument proves you understand the other side before defending your own.

Then have them complete this sentence before writing their claim:

✏️ "People who disagree with me believe ___ because ___."

This simple shift moves argument from opinion-sharing to perspective-taking — and it changes the quality of everything students write afterward.

The stretch between October and January isn't one long semester. It's a series of short sprints.

Between fall break, holidays, early dismissals, and snow days, the calendar rarely gives you the runway you planned for. Cathy Tooley shares three ways to work with the schedule instead of against it 👇

- Plan backwards: look at when the next break lands and build your lessons back from that date. It protects the instructional days you actually have.

- Integrate the holidays: they're coming either way. Build them into your content so students engage with the season instead of getting distracted by it.

- Think in mini-lessons: this isn't the time for a three-week project. Short, self-contained lessons survive interruptions. Long ones don't.

The breaks aren't going anywhere. Your planning can account for them!

📝 New on the Blog: Stop Teaching Argument as "Being Right"

Every teacher has seen it. You assign an argument essay and the room fills with certainty. Students come armed with opinions, ready to defend their side like it's a championship game.

Voices get louder. Positions get stronger. Minds get more closed.

Today's students have grown up hearing "comment below," "share your thoughts," "what's your take?" Their voice matters — and that's a good thing. But the unintended side effect is that many students now believe their opinion is the destination of thinking rather than the beginning of it.

True argument isn't defending your first opinion. It's coming to terms with competing ideas.

When we teach argument well, students stop asking "How do I prove I'm right?" and start asking "Why do reasonable people disagree about this?"

That question changes everything.

Cathy Tooley shares three simple hand gestures you can start using tomorrow!

- Compare and contrast: hold out one hand, then the other, to prompt students for two different viewpoints. It helps them physically see the difference between perspectives.

- Keep going: a rolling forward motion that tells students they're on the right track and need to expand. Especially powerful for verbal processors who think out loud.

- Go higher: point upward when an answer is correct but surface-level. It challenges students to move past the facts and elevate their thinking.

No prep. No materials. Just a small shift that draws out deeper responses.
