The rate of loneliness is definitely on the rise in the United States and also in the United Kingdom where Loneliness Awareness Week is observed. Dr. Vivek Murthy, United States Surgeon General, stated "Loneliness is far more than a bad feeling--it harms both individual and societal health. It is associated with a greater risk of cardiovascular disease, dementia, stroke, depression, anxiety and premature death. The mortality impact of being socially disconnected is similar to that caused by smoking up to 15 ci******es a day." Resolve today to start making positive connections with those around you like sharing a smile or a joke, spreading a kind word or enjoying a shared meal.
Occupational Therapists can help with tackling loneliness and social isolation by meeting with clients, determining what matters to them and collaborating on mutually agreed upon goals to address these issues.
