What happens when one painful decision makes you question your ability to hear God?

A friend told me, “I just don’t think I can trust my discernment anymore.”

She had prayed, waited, and believed she was making the right decision. Years later, after a painful divorce, she began to believe that getting it wrong meant she simply wasn’t good at discernment.

But one bad decision doesn’t have to define your confidence for the rest of your life.

If you’ve ever questioned whether you can really hear God—or trust what you’re hearing—this conversation is for you.

Sometimes the breakthrough starts with realizing, “My way isn’t working.”

Joseph and Brittany found themselves caught in anxiety, complaining, and focusing on everything going wrong.

The turning point? Recognizing the pattern, choosing to trust God, and allowing Him to refine what the pressure was exposing.

Failure doesn’t mean you missed God.

The people doing extraordinary things aren’t necessarily those who never failed. They’re the ones who kept going.

Sometimes the hard seasons develop something in us—and teach us something about God’s character—that success alone cannot.

What are you actually trusting in?

Pressure has a way of revealing the answer.

For Joseph Williams, a difficult season exposed that his trust had shifted from God to the gifts, resources, and abilities God had given him.

The invitation was to trust deeper.

What happens when everything you trusted in stops working?
A lawsuit and business crisis brought Joseph Williams to a difficult realization:

“I didn’t actually trust Him. I had trusted in the gifts that He had given me, the resources, the backstops.”

Sometimes the end of yourself is where a deeper trust in God begins.

Your employees are more than your bottom line.

People spend a significant part of their lives at work. So if you’re responsible for 5, 50, or 1,000 employees, consider the influence you’ve been entrusted with.

Randy Griffin asked a challenging question in our latest conversation:

Are these people simply contributing to the bottom line—or are they people to be cared for?

That changes the way we think about leadership.

How are we caring for our people? What kind of culture are we creating? Are people flourishing because of our leadership? What responsibility do we have for the people God has entrusted to us?

Randy and I unpack these questions as we talk about the intersection of business, ministry, and Kingdom leadership.

What are we measuring in the business leaders in our churches?

Are they volunteering? Are they giving? Are they showing up on Sunday?

Those things matter. But Randy Griffin raises another important question: Are we supporting and equipping them for the ministry they’re already doing Monday through Friday?

Many CEOs and business owners are carrying significant responsibility. They’re leading teams, creating jobs, shaping workplace culture, and influencing people who may never walk through a church door.

What if pastors met business leaders where they are and helped them become more effective in the assignment God has already given them?

That’s part of what Randy and I unpack in this conversation about bridging the gap between pastors and business leaders.

People spend more time at work than almost anywhere else.
Think about what that means if you’re leading 5, 50, or 1,000 employees.

It raises an important question:

Are these people simply contributing to the bottom line—or are they people entrusted to our care?

As business leaders, we have significant influence over the environment where people spend a huge portion of their lives. That makes leadership more than a business responsibility. It’s stewardship.

How are people being cared for? What kind of culture are we creating? What responsibility do we have for those God has entrusted to our leadership?

Randy Griffin and I dig into these questions in our conversation about business, ministry, and the responsibility of Kingdom leadership.

Pastor, what if the first step to equipping the business leaders in your church wasn’t creating another program?

What if you simply bought one of them a coffee?

Ask them:

“What are you seeing God do in and through your workplace?”

“How are your marriage and family doing?”

“How can I pray for you?”

“What do you need to grow and be all God has called you to be in your place of work?”

Before building a program, platform, or message, get to know the people God has already entrusted to you. Enter their world. Listen. Discover what God is already doing.

You may be surprised by what you find—and how it changes the way you equip them on Sunday for what they’re called to do Monday through Friday.
