Day 365 on Duolingo.

Mostly French. Some chess. A little math to keep the brain honest.

None of it happened because of one big day. It happened because I showed up for a few minutes, most days, for a year straight.

That’s basically the same logic behind how money actually grows. Not the one big move. The boring, repeated decision. The contribution you don’t skip. The plan you stick with when nothing exciting is happening.

Consistency is unglamorous. It works anyway.

Still losing more chess games than I’d like to admit.

Your company stock grew. The tax bill when you sell can surprise you.

There are a few ways to soften that. One worth knowing is direct indexing.

Instead of just holding a fund, you own the individual stocks behind an index. When some dip, you sell them at a loss to offset the gains from selling your company stock.

Less tax. More kept.

It’s one tool among several. Some approaches still use ETFs, some hold the stocks directly. The right mix depends on your situation.

Made this video this morning after seeing the SpaceX news.

If you hold equity at a place like SpaceX, Anduril, Vertiv, Abbott, or Cardinal Health and want to think this through before you sell, send me a message or grab time using the link in my bio.

Most of these strategies start around $100k to $250k. Educational only, not advice.

Happy SpaceX IPO Day!

As a space enthusiast, I want to share a bit about my favorite space company, Orbital ATK. This company was acquired by Northrop Grumman in June 2018.

What made Orbital ATK stand out for me was their satellite servicing business. They developed a mission extension vehicle (MEV) that could attach to satellites, allowing them to extend their life cycle before being retired.

Congratulations to all SpaceX employees and early investors on this monumental moment. Good luck to everyone trying to purchase shares on the open market.

Wealth Espresso | Episode 41

A few weeks ago I stopped by Grandview Grind and grabbed an iced Americano. If you have never had one, it’s simple. You take a shot of espresso, or two if you’re really tired, and pour it over ice. Then you add some water. That’s it. I loved how it tasted, and Grandview Grind makes it well.

Here’s what I keep thinking about. That shot of espresso is strong. All of it is packed into one small cup. The stock you earn at work can be the same way. Your RSUs, your options, your ESPP shares, all of it can pile up in one place, tied to one company.

What you do with it is up to you. You can leave it alone and keep it strong. Or you can add some water, spread it out, and turn it into something you can enjoy for years. Neither choice is wrong. The point is to choose on purpose, not just let it sit there.

So if you have had more than a few of these shots add up over the years, and you are not sure what to do next, reach out. Glad to talk it through.

You finally had the year.

The bonus hit. The grant vested. The deal closed.

So why does it feel heavier instead of lighter?

Turns out a big year creates more questions than a normal year, not fewer. Is the number real. What does it actually change. Will next year look anything like this one.

That feeling has a name. It’s the lonely math of a big year.

New piece up now. Link in bio.

Wealth Espresso | Episode 40

Today’s stop: Little Lemons Play Cafe in Sunbury.

We have been loving this place with our two year old, Simon. You can sit and see the whole play area, so you are not running around chasing kids the entire time. The cold brew is really good and they have some fun lattes too. Solid snacks for little ones as well. If you have young kids, it is a nice local spot.

This week’s topic: nearing IPOs and managing the excitement.

We are getting closer to the SpaceX IPO and it is easy to feel the pull. Stocks often pop hard right after they go public and then come back down once the initial rush settles. When excitement builds around an IPO, some investors use dollar cost averaging as one way to manage the decision. This can allow participation if the price continues to rise while still having capital available if the price moves lower.

If you are navigating something like this and want to discuss it, I am happy to help.

Cheers

Most people build the portfolio before they have the conversation.

The allocation, the vesting schedule, the tax strategy. All of it sitting on top of questions that were never actually answered.

Three of those questions are in the image. None of them are about money.

Until you and your spouse agree on what the stock comp is for, until the ten year picture is on paper, until aging parents are part of the plan instead of an afterthought, you do not have a plan. You have a portfolio.

The conversation comes first. The strategy follows.

If you are holding equity and have not worked through these yet, that is the place to start. Always glad to talk it through. My email and cell are on the image.

Ever gotten off a call about your stock comp and quietly thought, I should have known that?

You’re not bad with money. Everything behind that line is the vocabulary one equity comp recipient is expected to just know. ISOs, AMT, QSBS, 83(b), the AMT credit. And that’s only the start of the list.

Your job is to be excellent at the thing you actually do. It was never to be a tax attorney and a securities lawyer on the side.

Wrote a piece on this. Link in bio.

Half of 2026 is almost gone.

If you have equity compensation, three questions worth answering before Q3 begins.

1. What is your RSU vest schedule between now and year-end?

2. What is your AMT exposure from year-to-date ISO exercises?

3. Is your concentrated stock position past your comfort threshold?

If you cannot answer all three in under five minutes, that is the planning gap. Half the year remains to close it.
