Some moments mark a turning point in how a vision begins to move forward. 🔥

Recently, our founder Kelsey Elizabeth Matthews facilitated the introduction of two key members of the consulting team: Dr. Mario De Souza, Organizational Development Consultant, and Dr. Rich Rader, Leadership Development Consultant. Both had been in conversation with her individually, but this was the moment where their perspectives, expertise, and ideas finally came together.

Their insights, backgrounds, and perspectives complemented one another, and it was immediately clear they understood both the future being shaped and the depth of the work ahead. It felt like the beginning of a shared language—two experts stepping into the same vision from different angles and seeing the same horizon.

The conversation focused on where Phoenix Rising is headed in 2026— not just programs or structure, but the bigger vision and direction of the work, and how leadership development, personal growth, and organizational development intersect to build leaders and systems that rise with purpose, clarity, and integrity.

Phoenix Rising Coaching & Consulting was built from vision long before it had a name. Kelsey's lived experiences that shaped the mission, the ideas sketched in notebooks, the early research and learning, late-night strategy notes, and the brand built at her grandmother's kitchen table were all rooted in the belief that leadership can, and should, be done differently.

Watching it all evolve from a one-woman blueprint into a team of experts aligned in purpose has been a powerful milestone. Seeing everyone in the same room speaking the same language and leaning into the same future felt like a history-making moment and a reminder that everything built, endured, refined, and fought for led here.

Kelsey is so grateful for the people who believed in her vision early and remained loyal to the process through every turn! What began as an idea carried alone has grown into a shared mission, held by people ready to help shape what comes next. Some chapters unfold slowly, others all at once— and this moment was the bridge between the two.

As our founder, Kelsey Elizabeth Matthews, just completed her elected term with the UNLV Alumni Association’s Legacy Board of Directors, we are proud to share that she has been elected to serve a three-year term on the Truman Scholars Association Board, beginning this month, January 2026!

The Harry S. Truman Scholarship is the nation’s premier graduate fellowship for students committed to careers in public service. Created by Congress as the official living memorial to President Harry S. Truman, the scholarship identifies and supports college juniors who demonstrate exceptional leadership potential and a steadfast commitment to serving the public good. More than 2,600 scholars nationwide make up this distinguished community.

Kelsey completed her interview for this role in December, and she was excited to receive her official approval and invitation to join the board.

For Kelsey— Nevada’s 2022 Truman Scholar— this new position represents a natural continuation of the work and responsibility she embraced the moment she became a Truman: a commitment to values-based leadership, service, collective impact, and investing in people and systems that shape a better future.

This next chapter is not a departure but a progression— another opportunity to advance the mission of empowering scholars, strengthening pathways for emerging leaders, and championing service in all its forms.

We are grateful for the trust placed in her and excited for the meaningful work ahead. Some doors close exactly when they’re meant to, making space for the ones aligned with purpose, clarity, and growth.

Kelsey is deeply grateful to the Truman Scholars Association for this honor. We look forward to the impact her next chapter will make, within the Truman community and beyond. 💙🎓

As of December 31st, 2025, Phoenix Rising Coaching & Consulting, LLC marks an important milestone for our Founder, Kelsey Elizabeth Matthews, with the completion of a two-year elected term as a 2024–2025 board member of the UNLV Alumni Association Legacy Board of Directors.

This period of service represented a formative leadership chapter— one that further shaped Kelsey’s people-centered, values-driven approach to leadership. Over the course of the term, this experience reinforced that effective leadership is defined not only by vision or outcomes, but by how leaders navigate complexity, engage in difficult conversations, prioritize relationships, honor commitments through adversity, and remain anchored to mission.

These lessons directly inform the leadership philosophy and work of Phoenix Rising Coaching & Consulting, LLC: people-centered, mission-focused, heart-led, vision-oriented, and grounded in follow-through, especially when the work is challenging.

While this chapter of board service concludes, Kelsey’s connection to UNLV continues. Kelsey and Phoenix Rising remain proud to support the university as a donor to the UNLV Honors College and UNLV Foundation, and looks ahead with enthusiasm to future opportunities for meaningful engagement.

Looking forward, 2026 will mark a significant milestone for the Phoenix Rising Scholars Program. Kelsey will return to the University of Nevada, Las Vegas to award the inaugural $1,000 Phoenix Rising Honors Scholarship in Memory of Gerrie Cowden, welcoming the program’s first student recipient. This will be announced and highlighted further at a later date.

What began as a vision rooted in resilience, leadership, and community is now becoming tangible impact— through direct investment in students who are rising, persevering, and stepping into their potential. This moment reflects the organization’s long-term commitment to leadership development, service, and follow-through.

Phoenix Rising Coaching & Consulting, LLC extends sincere gratitude to the UNLV Alumni Association for allowing Kelsey the opportunity to contribute, collaborate, and grow alongside dedicated alumni leaders. This chapter represents a foundational period that continues to inform the organization’s work, values, and mission moving forward.

This past week, our founder Kelsey Elizabeth Matthews met with Dr. Mario De Souza, Phoenix Rising’s Organizational Development Consultant, for an inspiring and forward-thinking program development session.

Together, Kelsey and Dr. De Souza spent the afternoon brainstorming ideas for expanding leadership frameworks, challenging outdated paradigms, and designing innovative structures that can help to create safer, more ethical, and more empowering systems of leadership.
