In February, AMD/Low Vision Awareness is recognized as the month of vision impairment that restricts our normal activities of daily living and is unable to be corrected with visual aids such as glasses, contacts, medications, or even surgery. Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is also proclaimed within this eye-awareness month. Symptoms of AMD/Low Vision Awareness affect people with reading, driving, recognizing faces of individuals, or even distinguishing different colors. It can also affect our central vision which affects seeing things in central vision, our peripheral vision which affects the sight seen from the corners of the eyes, our depth perception of seeing distance between objects, glare resistance to bright light, and night vision which can affect our ability to see at night.

So, this month, focus on scheduling an eye exam with your ophthalmologist to check if you have AMD/Low Vision or any of the above symptoms.

If you’re struggling to remain in your own home, we can provide nurses and personal care attendants to help you maintain your independence. Call our direct number, 860-354-7698. We look forward to hearing from you!

December 7-13: National Hand Washing Awareness Week

National Hand Washing week is observed the first week in December and raises the importance of personal hand hygiene which begins and ends with washing your hands with soap and clean water for at least 20 seconds or by singing the Happy Birthday song. The Four Principles of Hand Awareness which is endorsed by the American Medical Association and American Academy of Family Physicians are: 1) Wash your hands when they are dirty and before eating; 2) Do not cough into hands; 3) Do not sneeze into hands; and 4) Don’t put your fingers in your eyes, nose or mouth. Washing your hands is critical in preventing COVID, pneumonia, flu, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), colds, germs, sickness, diarrhea, and all forms of infections. So, make sure you clean the front, back, between fingers, and under the nails to ensure you are free of any germs, as clean hands can save your life.

October 19-25: National Respiratory Care Week

National Respiratory Care Week identifies the important role and the hard work that respiratory care professionals play in the care of their patients. Their vital role is helping people breathe comfortably and address chronic lung diseases. They work in various environments such as hospitals, rehabilitation centers, sleep clinics, and home health care. There are many symptoms of chronic lung disease and respiratory distress such as chest tightness, shortness of breath, stress, persistent coughing, and frequent colds or infections. Contact your primary care physician if you have any of these symptoms and may refer you to a respiratory specialist. There are also many local communities that offer education on respiratory awareness, so, getting early detection is paramount in receiving treatment and care for your lung health. If you have a respiratory therapist or are looking to schedule one, show them how much you appreciate all they do in helping you and your peers breathe better as every breath we take counts!

October 15 is Global Handwashing Day:

Global Handwashing Day is recognized yearly to promote the importance of hand hygiene to deter ailments like COVID-19, flu, pneumonia, Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV), respiratory infections, gastroenteritis, and diarrhea. Handwashing is encouraged throughout the world globally via educating schools systems, workplaces, homes, and your local communities. By using proper handwashing practices such as after using the bathroom, after coughing or sneezing, blowing your nose, touching your mouth, and touching your eyes or face is critical in preventing diseases being spread. Try using the method of singing the “Happy Birthday Song” while washing your hands with soap and water to protect your health and the health of others.

If you’re struggling to remain in your own home, we can provide nurses and personal care attendants to help you maintain your independence so you can stay at home. Call our direct number, 860-354-7698. We look forward to hearing from you!
