That little crawl toward a favorite toy? It’s actually a BIG developmental moment. 🥹

When babies move toward a toy, they’re working on so much more than mobility:

🧠 Motor planning — figuring out how to get their body where they want to go
💪 Strength & stability — building through the shoulders, arms, core, and hips
⚖️ Weight shifting — learning to move weight from one side of the body to the other
👀 Visual-motor skills — coordinating what they see with how they move
🤲 Hand skills — reaching, grasping, and interacting with the toy once they get there

From an OT perspective, motivation matters. Placing an interesting toy just within reach gives babies a natural reason to practice these emerging skills through PLAY. 💛

Sometimes the best developmental activity is simply giving your baby a safe space, a little encouragement, and something they really want to go after.

The sensory activity is just the beginning 👀🧠

Ice painting might look like a simple art activity, but your little one is actually getting a workout for their executive functioning skills!

As they paint, they’re:

✨ Making choices about colors and where to paint

✨ Planning and organizing their movements

✨ Problem-solving as the ice shifts and melts

✨ Adjusting their pressure and strategy

✨ Practicing flexibility when things don’t go exactly as planned

This is why we love open-ended play at Purposeful Play. There doesn’t have to be one “right” way to play for meaningful learning to happen.

Sometimes the best learning happens when kids are simply given the space to explore, experiment, and figure it out.
