HOLDING SPACE: AN ONLINE MENTAL HEALTH CIRCLE FOR DOULAS

Thu, Feb 26 at 7:00-8:30 PM

HOLDING SPACE is an inclusive, online mental health support circle created exclusively for doulas who give deeply and deserve to be held, too. This dedicated gathering offers a space to pause, exhale, and tend to your own emotional and mental well-being—while in community with peers who truly understand the heart and complexity of birth work.

Facilitated in a nurturing and affirming environment, Holding Space invites doulas to share openly, reflect honestly, and reconnect with themselves beyond the role of caregiver.

Together, we explore the full spectrum of this work—burnout, grief, joy, boundaries, sustainability, and everything in between—without judgment or expectation to “be strong.”
This circle is not about fixing or performing. It is about being witnessed, supported, and reminded that your care matters, too.

Mama Glow - Centering Black women in birth means centering truth, choice, and bodily autonomy. ✊🏾🤎

We honor birth as sacred—and informed. Delayed cord clamping is a practice where the umbilical cord remains intact until pulsation has ceased (or until after the placenta is delivered), allowing continued placental transfusion after birth.

Before birth, baby and placenta share a circulating blood supply—separate from the birthing person. The placenta acts as lungs, kidneys, liver, and gut in utero, and much of baby’s blood volume remains in the placenta at any given time. That blood is not “extra.” It belongs to the baby.

With the cord intact, babies may receive ~80 mL of blood within the first minute, and up to ~100 mL by 3 minutes—delivering vital iron stores (40–50 mg/kg body weight) that can support healthy development and help prevent iron deficiency in the first year of life.

Lotus birth (umbilical cord nonseverance) is a spiritual practice in which the cord remains uncut, keeping baby and placenta connected until natural separation occurs—typically within 3–10 days.

Birth is power. Birth is information. Birth is choice.
Stay connected. Stay informed. Stay sovereign.

SAY HER NAME - Italia Fragasse 💔
Black mothers matter. Black babies matter! 👶🏽

On October 30th, 2025 Italia Fragasse had a seizure that took both her, and her son’s, lives. Italia was diagnosed with Epilepsy when she was 19 years old and took medication daily to treat it.

Her community is mourning the tragic loss of Italia “Tt” Fragasse, who, at the tender age of 21, has passed away.

She was a cherished daughter, sister, cousin, partner, friend, and her favorite role: a mother.

Motherhood was one of Italia’s most important journeys. She and her partner Adrian have been raising Ilaria, their beautiful baby girl, together, and were expecting Adrian III, their baby boy, in the new year.

She made her doctors aware that she had begun to have seizures very frequently during her second pregnancy with baby Adrian, and like many Black women who talk to their doctors about concerns, nothing was done to adjust her care plan to remedy the situation.

THE STATS:
📌 Black Mothers die from pregnancy related causes 4x more often than non-Black mothers do. This is because of disparities in the care that we get to access.

📌 Black Mothers with Epilepsy have an even higher increased risk of death during their pregnancies.

It is Epilepsy awareness month and Italia and baby Adrian should still be alive.

The family is determined to celebrate them.

To fight for them and to honor what Italia what have wanted.

PLEASE DONATE:

📌 Ensure that Italia and baby Adrian III having the funeral and burial arrangements they deserve.

📌 Entirely fund Italia and baby Adrian IlI’s funeral costs and headstone.

📌 Provide important resources and care for Italia’s daughter Ilaria.

Help send Italia and her baby, home.

Help ensure that her daughter has everything that she needs.

Help us make sure that she did not die in vain.

Xo 🙏🏽

YOUR BIRTH. YOUR VOICE - 👶🏽 Pregnancy and childbirth are known universal rites of passage. Together, the two encompass moments where life expands, shifts, and reshapes the birthing person and the surrounding community in ways both visible and unseen. And yet, far too many birthing people and women feel like passive bystanders, rather than active participants, in this process of unfolding. For these women and birthing people, the beauty of the experience is masked by the muting of their voices and the resultant overshadowing by systems, routines, and decisions made in their absence. At a time where trust, autonomy, and agency are more significant than ever, expectant parents are pondering the right questions: In a sea of various voices of authority, how can one make sure that their needs and values are truly heard?

Enter “Your Birth, Your Voice”, Glow and ’s campaign where shared-decision making serves as not only a framework, but a form of advocacy. By moving the voices, preferences, and lived experiences of birthing people from the margins of society and our delivery rooms to the center, the campaign attempts to bridge the gap between knowledge and actualization. And in this sacred process, the co-branded Shared Decision-Making Toolkit stands as the ultimate accessible facilitator.

The toolkit contains a template for crafting a birth plan—a working document that allows expectant parents to list their desires for several aspects of their birthing experience. Users are encouraged to draft the birth plan directly into the toolkit for their own review, before discussing with their care providers.

Mama Glow - Last year taught me what my body and heart are capable of. Birth changed everything—my pace, my priorities, my definition of strength.

This year, I witnessed birth not as a moment, but as a communal act. Hands held. Voices steady. Circles formed.
Entering the new year honoring the power of community in bringing life forth.

This year deepened my understanding of birth as both personal and political. Community care, ancestral knowledge, and presence remain the foundation. Moving into the new year committed to holding space with intention and love.

Another year of witnessing strength, vulnerability, and collective power. Birth work continues to shape how I move through the world—slowly, communally, with care.

Stepping into the new year with a quiet, hard-earned glow 🤍

Mama Glow - PLACENTA + LOTUS BIRTH ✨
Placenta “Circular Cake’ in Latin
Considered the “external soul” in Old Testament. Family tree. Produces hormones - (hCG), progesterone, estrogen, & human placental lactogen (hPL). In Bali the placenta is called the “Ari Ari” deriving from the word, younger sibling, & is considered the physical body of the baby’s guardian angel. It’s a barrier between fetal & maternal circulations.
_
LOTUS BIRTH (or umbilical cord nonseverance - UCNS) is the practice of leaving the umbilical cord uncut after childbirth so that the baby is left attached to the placenta until the cord naturally separates at the navel. The cord naturally separates at the umbilicus generally occurs within 3–10 days after birth. To prepare the placenta: place it in a bed of sea salt that you change daily, cover it generously with with more salt and ceremonial herbs. Lotus Birth and Delayed cord clamping, allow for the flow of iron-rich blood from the placenta to the newborn & that boosts myelin levels. Increasing myelination of the motor system allows the infant to ‘do’ more; for example, lift the head, reach out, roll over & much later, crawl. It also banks iron stores for the first 4-5 months of life, so the baby doesn’t have iron deficiency. This ritual is common with home birth.
_
PLACENTA ENCAPSULATION Preparing for your placenta encapsulation before your birth: Pack bag and bring a small portable cooler. Contact or have your doula contact your placenta encapsulist within 6 hours postpartum and schedule a pick up time for your placenta. Most doulas will take the placenta keep it in the fridge and arrange the transfer with the encapsulist.

Some hospitals have policies about when you can take your placenta home so be sure you’re clear prior to your birth. Let your doctor & nurse know that you are keeping your placenta & they will put it in a container after examining it. The placenta should be packed on ice & placed in the cooler ASAP. Within 24 hours of your birth the placenta is picked up & your placenta pills will be ready within 3-4 days. Just in time for the drop in maternal hormones. ❤️ xo

🎄Season’s Greetings From Mama Glow -

As we come to the close of another year, we want to pause and offer our deepest gratitude to each of you—our incredible doulas, families, partners, and supporters. This community is the heart of Mama Glow, and everything we’ve accomplished this year is because of your commitment, care, and belief in birth justice and holistic and comprehensive birth support.

Together, we’ve celebrated powerful wins: showing up for thousands of families, uplifting our global community of 3,000+ doulas, expanding access to doula services, and continuing to build a world where birth is safe and parenting is honored, supported, and rooted in dignity. Every moment of advocacy, every family served, and every partnership strengthened has moved us closer to the future we’re working toward—together.

As the year comes to an end, we raise a glass to all that we’ve achieved, to the lessons learned, and to the resilience and love that carried us through. May this season bring you rest, reflection, and joy, and may the new year open with abundance, health, and continued collective impact.

Thank you for being part of the Mama Glow community. We look forward to seeing you in the new year, in class, online, and for some of you- in the delivery room! Cheers to the close of this year and to a bright, powerful New Year ahead.

With gratitude and warmth,
Your Mama Glow Family
