Monday Mill Feature: The Green Chain 🚧

This week’s Monday Mill Feature highlights the Green Chain, one of the final steps of the production process. The Green Chain is the long conveyor system where freshly sawn lumber travels through the final stages of handling before leaving the production line.

As lumber exits the end trimmer and begins moving down the chain, our lumber inspector grades each board for quality, grade, and length. Once the lumber is graded, our employees stack it into the proper bundle. The bundles are then packed according to grade and length, keeping the lumber sorted and ready for shipment.

Recently, we made a safety improvement to this area by installing an emergency shut-off cable along both sides of the chain. This system allows an employee to immediately stop operations at any point with a single pull of the cable.

Adding this emergency shut-off is one of the many ways we continue to evaluate our machinery and work processes to make improvements that enhance employee safety!

⚡️Monday Mill Feature: The Edger⚡️

After a log has been sawn down into rough boards, the next stop is the edger.

The edger is responsible for turning rough-sawn, live edged boards into clean, straight-edged lumber. As each board reaches the machine, our operator uses laser lights to scan it and identify the best cutting line. The lasers show exactly where to trim the board, so we can remove the live and uneven edges, while keeping as much high-quality lumber as possible.

Once the board is lined up, it travels through the machine where circular saw blades trim both sides in a single pass. What comes out is a board with straight, uniform edges that’s ready for the next step in the milling process.

The strips that are trimmed from each board fall onto a conveyor below the machine and are carried directly to our chipper. From there, they are processed into wood chips and sawdust.

Every board that comes through the edger is a little different, so it takes experience, attention to grade, detail, and the help of laser-guided technology to produce the consistent, quality lumber that we want coming out of our mill each day.
