JMP now joins the ranks as a 3M Preferred Installer, specifically a 3M DI-NOC™ Architectural Finishes Preferred Installer. This revolutionary product is changing the finishing game. With over 900 patterns, the design possibilities are endless. This durable and versatile adhesive backed product requires far less material and labor costs and limits downtime and construction waste - all big wins for the scenic design and fabrication industry.

Take a look at the product in use for our New Balance | Bricks & Wood pop-up and a new exhibit kiosk for our partners at The California Academy of Sciences.

Turning our client's vision into reality can be a challenge, but we love a good challenge here at JMP! Here is a look back at one of the largest we have built in our 35 year history.

The NHL hosted their stadium series at Levi’s Stadium, and in collaboration with our client e2k, we fabricated two giant goalie masks through which the players entered the ice rink. The 8’ x 9’ x 12’ masks were sculpted from eps foam with a fiberglass coating and featured a center split on hinges.

The process began with using 123D modeling software to slice the helmet horizontally to create cut files. Our CNC machine worked for 3 days straight cutting and labeling each slice, which were then stacked using vertical dowels. Once stacked, gaps were filled and the sculpting tools were used to smooth the surface. The masks were then coated with a layer of Aqua-Resin and painted. The protective face mask was created using pvc pipe and an EZ Bender which allowed us to get the uniform curves needed for a realistic look.

The process concluded by putting the giants on large casters and loading them onto a flat bed truck, providing the drivers on 880 quite a show en route to the stadium. The masks proved to be one of the more unique projects JMP has tackled in our 30 years in the business, and we had a ton of fun creating them.

We partnered with the California Academy of Sciences once again to create their new and improved Twilight Zone exhibit in the aquarium. Highlighting ecosystems found in the deep sea, the exhibit teaches visitors about this little known world, and what it takes to explore it. From elaborate dive gear to pressurized fish collection, come learn about this fascinating underworld. JMP helped with much of the infrastructure including a new diver display, and improved lightboxes for the very dark exhibit space.

Oakland students, employers, educators and City staff participated in the annual Oakland Manufacturing Day Student Tours of Oakland manufacturers, and our scene shop was invited to be one of the stops on the tour. Coordinated by City of Oakland EWDD, Laney College and the Oakland Unified School District, we participated by presenting a day in the life at JMP to two groups of students interested in creating entertaining environments.

The tour began with a process video highlighting our production process for the Yosemite Visitor Center's Mountain Climbing Exhibit. Students then had the chance to learn a bit more about how we build stuff, with a hands on presentation by John Murray. Producer Tony Irik presented floor plans and renderings of event design, explaining the process behind creating digital representations of the final product in order to visually communicate with the client, and the carpenters in the shop. And producer Gary Beisaw gave the guests a shop tour, with a sneak peak at some of the current projects underway. At the end, our visitors were invited to take home some shop-made swag including stickers and laser cut items.

We are always glad to help build community in Oakland, and this was a great way to do so. Thanks for the invite !

In yet another successful collaboration with our friends at Covive we helped fabricate interpretive displays for the Bay Discovery Cruise. The multi-faceted exhibit highlights the history of the iconic Alcatraz prison and the unique geography, flora and fauna of the San Francisco Bay.

The 6-part exhibit includes a wall mounted flora and fauna infographic, an interactive touchscreen display, a touch table with sculpted objects representative of the area, a topographic map of the bay, an Alcatraz artifact display case, and rail mounted tablets with interactive content.

Our role in the collaboration included creating the infrastructure for all of the elements, including custom aluminum tables and vinyl covers, the acrylic vitrine for the artifact display, and the 126″ x 56″ flora and fauna graphic wall. We were part of a dynamic team of creatives that brought their own particular expertise to create a very cool display. The client, Alcatraz City Cruises who is a National Park Services concessionaire, recently added the hybrid ferry to their fleet and tours will begin in Spring 2025. We continue to grow our exhibition experience with our first moving exhibit.

We had the pleasure of working with the Lindsay Wildlife Experience in Walnut Creek on their updated honey bee exhibit, Hive Alive. The display features a dimensional letterset and honeycomb shaped infographic with imagery and text showcasing this incredibly important insect. Visitors can also get up close and personal with an actual hive kept behind an acrylic display case. Floral window clings and vinyl honeycomb accents round out the exhibit. We have a great working relationship with the LWE, and encourage you to visit this amazing learning institution. Not only to do they offer a great educational experience, they are also one of the preeminent wildlife rehabilitation facilities in the Bay Area.

If you had asked us 35 years ago if we aspired to make our mark on the book publishing world, we would have laughed. But today, an image of our work lives on the cover of 'Museums in Motion: An Introduction to the Histories, Functions, and Aspirations of Museums' by Juilee Decker. How cool is that?

The image features the interactive coral element found on the Academy in Action exhibit at The California Academy of Sciences. When touched, the display recreates coral spawning with a dispersement of light behind a panel of pin holes. JMP designed the assembly, created the shop drawing, prepped the coral image for the direct to substrate print, and assembled everything you see in the exhibit. BarkerBlue produced the print, Xometry created the brass coral element, and California Academy of Sciences provided the electronic infrastructure that triggers the spawn. Our collaboration with the Academy continues to push us to bigger and better things, and now we can add book covers to our list!
