While out running our Trash Caddie routes today, we were fortunate enough to see an old boat we rode on as a child.
A little piece of New Jersey history sailed through the Cape May Canal today!
The A.J. Meerwald was built in Dorchester, New Jersey, in 1928 and spent decades harvesting oysters from the Delaware Bay. During World War II, she was taken over by the U.S. Coast Guard and used as a fireboat. After surviving changing times and years of hard work, the schooner was restored and designated New Jersey’s official tall ship in 1998.
Today, the nearly century-old Meerwald serves as a floating classroom, preserving the maritime history and traditions of South Jersey.
What an incredible sight to catch right here in Cape May County! Have you ever seen—or sailed aboard—the A.J. Meerwald?
