Medicare open enrollment starts today.

Here's the part of my retirement I didn't plan well enough for: LoriAnn's health insurance.

Medicare covers one person, not a couple. I was the main subscriber on our insurance, and she wasn't old enough for Medicare. When I moved to Medicare, her coverage didn't come with me.

We found her a private plan in Utah. Then we moved to Florida and had to shop all over again. What surprised us was the price. Her coverage alone costs about what we used to pay for both of us.

If your spouse is younger than you, put that number in your retirement budget now, not after your 65th birthday.

Medicare open enrollment starts October 15.

If you've sold your practice in the last couple of years, your sale may still be raising your Medicare premiums. Medicare looks at your tax return from two years back, and mine more than quadrupled my premium. Same coverage. Same doctor visits, which for me is close to none.

The DSO that bought my dental practice wanted my building too. I said no.

Everyone I asked was split, including my accountant and a real estate broker. A couple of years in, the rent covers the mortgage and taxes with some left over, my son-in-law manages it, and the building keeps gaining value.

It isn't risk free, and I'm honest about that in the post. If you own your building and you're a few years from selling, this one is for you.

After 37 years running my own practice, the sale finally closed and the money landed. I thought the hard part was over.

Then I had to figure out what to do with it, and I made some expensive mistakes trusting one advisor without doing my own homework first.

Every retirement calculator wants a number from you. I never had one.

What I had instead was a rental building, a couple of retirement accounts, and faith it would be enough. Looking back, the number was never really the problem. Knowing exactly where the income would come from every month, that was the part I wish I'd nailed down sooner.

St. George was my escape valve for several years. Wednesday night drives after a long week in the practice, piano with the primary kids, back home Sunday after church. Last week I drove into town and it hit me: it's not my refuge anymore. It's just where my daughter lives. And that's not a loss. That's proof the transition worked. New post on the blog.
