🍂 WHAT MAKES OCTOBER DIFFERENT? THE PESTS KNOW WINTER IS COMING! 🐭🐞

The leaves are changing, temperatures are dropping, and all across Philadelphia and the Delaware Valley, pests are changing their behavior, too!

October is a particularly important time for pest prevention because many pests are searching for three things:

🏠 SHELTER — Mice, rats, stink bugs, and other insects are looking for protected places to spend the colder months.

🍽️ FOOD — Rodents are attracted to accessible food sources, from pantry goods to unsecured outdoor trash.

🌡️ PROTECTION FROM THE COLD — As temperatures drop and daylight hours shorten, seasonal changes encourage many pests to seek winter hiding places.

👀 WHAT SHOULD YOU WATCH FOR THIS OCTOBER?

🐭 Mice and Rats — Finding their way into garages, basements, attics, and wall spaces.

🐞 Stink Bugs — Gathering around windows, siding, and exterior walls, looking for places to overwinter.

🍁 Boxelder Bugs and Asian Lady Beetles — Collecting on sunny exterior walls and searching for sheltered entry points.

🐝 Yellowjackets and Wasps — Remaining active around outdoor gathering areas, trash cans, and fallen fruit.

🌿 Ticks — Still active in leaf litter, brush, and wooded areas, even as temperatures begin to cool.

Here's the important part: By the time winter arrives, some of these pests may already have settled inside your home!

✅ October is an excellent time to inspect your property, seal potential entry points, and address pest activity before it becomes a bigger problem.

At Evans Pest Control, we're helping homeowners and businesses throughout Philadelphia, the surrounding Pennsylvania counties, and South Jersey prepare for the changing season.

🍂 Fall Changes More Than the Weather — It Changes Pest Behavior

As temperatures begin to drop across Philadelphia and the Delaware Valley, pests start adjusting too.

🐭 Mice and rats begin looking for reliable food, warmth, shelter and protected nesting areas. A small opening around a foundation, door or utility line may be all they need to get inside.

🐝 Yellowjackets and other stinging insects can remain very active during early fall, especially around trash, outdoor dining areas, sugary drinks and other food sources.

🪳 Cockroaches don't take the winter off. Many cockroach species can survive and reproduce inside buildings throughout the year, which means fall activity may point to an existing problem that needs attention.

And then there are stink bugs and other seasonal invaders looking for protected places to spend the colder months.

Simple fall maintenance can help—remove accumulated leaves and debris, trim vegetation away from the building, reduce clutter and keep trash contained. But one of the most important steps is identifying the openings and conditions that allow pests to get established in the first place.

At Evans Pest Control, we help homeowners and businesses identify pest activity, entry points and conditions that can turn a small fall problem into a much bigger winter issue.

🍁 Fall Pest Control Maintenance Starts Before Winter Arrives

As the weather cools, pest activity doesn’t simply stop—it changes.

Mice and rats begin looking for warmer shelter, yellowjackets can remain active around food and trash, and cockroaches may continue living and reproducing indoors regardless of the season. At the same time, stink bugs and other overwintering pests may begin searching for protected places inside homes and commercial buildings.

That’s why fall is an important time to inspect your property and address small issues before they become winter problems.

A good fall pest maintenance plan should include checking for:

• Gaps around doors, foundations and utility openings
• Areas where rodents may find food or shelter
• Trash and dumpster areas around commercial properties
• Leaves, clutter and debris near the building
• Signs of cockroach activity in basements, kitchens or utility spaces
• Active wasp or yellowjacket nests near entrances and walkways

At Evans Pest Control, we help homeowners and businesses identify pest activity, entry points and conditions that may attract pests as the seasons change.

🍂 A little prevention now can make a big difference later.

🦟 MOSQUITOES ARE MORE THAN JUST A SUMMER NUISANCE

A newly confirmed case of locally acquired dengue fever in Florida is drawing renewed attention to the health risks associated with mosquitoes.
The Florida Department of Health recently confirmed that a person in Citrus County contracted dengue locally - meaning the infection was associated with mosquito transmission in the area rather than simply being brought home from international travel.
Dengue is transmitted primarily by Aedes mosquitoes and can cause fever, severe headache, muscle and joint pain, nausea and rash. While most people recover, severe cases can become serious.
There is no reason to suggest that dengue is currently spreading here in the Philadelphia area, but stories like this are an important reminder: mosquitoes aren't simply annoying. Mosquito populations can carry and transmit disease, which makes controlling them around homes, businesses and outdoor spaces important.
One of the biggest contributors to mosquito activity is something surprisingly simple: standing water. Buckets, clogged gutters, planters, children's toys, birdbaths, discarded containers and other areas that collect rainwater can provide mosquitoes with places to reproduce.
At Evans Pest Control, mosquito management is about more than making the backyard more comfortable. It's about identifying the conditions that allow mosquito populations to develop and taking a professional, proactive approach to controlling them.

⚠️ A rare tick-borne virus has now been confirmed in New York.

Researchers recently identified the first confirmed New York State case of Bourbon virus, a rare illness associated with the lone star tick. There is currently no vaccine and no specific antiviral medicine for Bourbon virus disease. Symptoms may include fever, severe fatigue, headache, body aches, rash, nausea, and vomiting.

The New York case does not mean there is a Delaware Valley outbreak—but lone star ticks are already present in Pennsylvania and New Jersey, making tick awareness especially important during outdoor activities.

Protect yourself and your family:

🔴 Use a repellent labeled for ticks
🔴 Wear long pants and closed shoes
🔴 Avoid tall grass, leaf litter, and brushy edges
🔴 Check your body, clothing, children, and pets afterward
🔴 Shower soon after returning indoors
🔴 Contact a healthcare professional if illness develops after a tick bite

Evans Pest Control can inspect your property, identify likely tick habitats, and provide practical Integrated Pest Management recommendations to help reduce tick activity around your home or business.

🐀 Could rodents be entering through a hidden gap in your building?

Mice and rats can use surprisingly small openings around foundations, doors, siding, utility pipes, and masonry. Look for signs such as:

🔴 Gnaw marks or freshly exposed wood
🔴 Dark grease smudges around an opening
🔴 Droppings near walls or structural gaps
🔴 Shredded material or debris
🔴 Worn travel paths along walls or foundations

Mice can use an opening about ¼ inch wide, while rats may enter through a space approximately the diameter of a quarter.

Finding and correcting entry points is an important part of long-term rodent control. Evans Pest Control utilizes the principles of Integrated Pest Management to identify rodent activity, travel routes, entry points, and the conditions attracting them.

🐀 Are Giant Rats Really Out There?
Everyone has heard rats “the size of a cat”—but how large can rats actually get?

Some giant rat species do exist in other parts of the world and may reach nearly three feet in total length, including the tail. However, the rats most commonly found around homes and businesses in the Philadelphia area are Norway rats and roof rats, which are typically much smaller.

Norway rats are generally the heavier of the two, while roof rats have slimmer bodies, longer tails, and excellent climbing abilities. Poor lighting, distance, and a rat’s long tail can also make it appear much larger than it really is.

No matter the size, signs of rodent activity should be taken seriously. Watch for:
🔴 Droppings
🔴 Scratching sounds in walls or ceilings
🔴 Gnawed food packaging, wiring, or wood
🔴 Greasy rub marks along walls
🔴 Burrows around foundations or outdoor structures
Seeing one rat may indicate that others are nearby. Evans Pest Control can inspect your property, identify entry points, and develop an effective rodent-control plan for your home or business.

🐝 WHAT'S THE BUZZ?

Have you ever noticed a paper wasp nest tucked under your roof overhang or porch?

There's actually a good reason they're there!

In this week's episode, Bobby BEE explains why paper wasps choose sheltered locations like eaves, soffits, porches, and decks to build their homes—and why they're more beneficial than many people realize.

While paper wasps help control other insects, nests located near doors, patios, or walkways can become a safety concern for your family.

🎥 Watch the newest episode of What's The Buzz? and learn something new about the insects living around your home.
