The first recorded Black American winemaker and winery owner in the United States was John June Lewis, Sr. founder of the historic Woburn Winery in Clarksville, Virginia, in 1940. Lewis fell in love with viticulture while stationed in France and the Rhine Valley during World War I. Following the repeal of Prohibition, he inherited land from his father, planted 10 acres of vineyards, and successfully produced and bottled his own estate-grown wines. His operations continued until the 1970s. Pioneers like Lewis began the long tradition of great Virginia wines! Happy Juneteenth!
