The best leaders let their people own the result their own way.
I learned this again over something as silly as making sweet tea.
I was staying with a host this past weekend and got asked to make tea while they grabbed lunch.
So I made a couple of gallons, my way, and it was good - it disappeared fast.
Then the host went and made more.
And I am not exaggerating, if there was a way to do it opposite to how I did it, that was the way they did it.
I was not mad.
I was fascinated.
Because the result was identical.
Good sweet tea everyone enjoyed.
Neither of us was too good to do the job, and neither of us tried to tell the other the one right way.
We both just stepped back and agreed the result is what matters.
Most managers cannot resist correcting the how.
