New in TEMS Engineering Management Review, “From Problem Solving to Synergy Solutions Teams: Balancing Lean Management With Innovation,” by Tal Katz-Navon PhD and Eitan Naveh. In today's dynamic business landscape, organizations are increasingly challenged to prioritize innovation in products, processes, and services while ensuring compliance with rules and maintaining operational efficiency. This dual focus creates a paradox, making it crucial to manage these competing priorities effectively to achieve sustainable performance across various dimensions.

To address this, the authors propose the concept of Synergy Solutions Teams (SSTs) that operate on the principle that collaborative efforts, combining the diverse strengths of individual members, achieve the best results. To that end, SSTs practice three team processes to push the boundaries of current possibilities and harness collective intelligence: first, engage in sense-making to interpret and understand complex situations, second, increase epistemic motivation for deep, accurate, and innovative problem-solving, and third, collaborate to enhance information processing. By fostering collaboration and leveraging the diverse skills, knowledge, and perspectives of team members, SSTs can create innovative, high-impact solutions that balance efficiency with innovation.

New in Transactions on Engineering Management, “Managing Trust in AI Systems: Evidence From Controlled Evaluation of Explanation Stability Under Data Imbalance,” by Shamkhal Mammadov, Ismail Abdulrashid, and Jiu-Biing Sheu. Engineering managers and analytics leaders increasingly rely on AI-based decision support systems to guide high-stakes investments under uncertainty, yet often lack tools to assess whether model explanations remain reliable when data are imbalanced.

This study provides engineering managers with actionable diagnostics to evaluate explanation stability before deploying XAI in operational settings. Specifically, the results identify imbalance thresholds beyond which feature attributions become unreliable, enabling managers to establish governance rules for when SHAP (SHapley Additive Explanations) or LIME (Local Interpretable Model-Agnostic Explanations) explanations can be trusted for justification, audit, and communication. Policymakers and organizational leaders can leverage the proposed stability metrics to inform responsible AI guidelines that go beyond transparency and address explanation consistency as a prerequisite for accountability. A key insight for practice is that high predictive accuracy does not guarantee stable or trustworthy explanations, highlighting a hidden managerial risk in AI adoption.

The latest update from TEMS President, Dr Sudeendra Koushik...

Warm greetings to you, your family, friends, and your communities. We see a lot of positive traction in our Society endeavours.

To start, when I speak to various volunteers, members, and non-members of TEMS, I hear that the visibility of our Society, in general, has improved significantly. This is great for both TEMS and the communities we serve, as it leads to aligned engagement. This is also reflected in the steady growth of membership across almost all regions. This is a fantastic trend and augurs well to our goal of 2x2 (two by two) – to double membership in two years.

We have launched a very important student chapter support program for financial funding and the call is open at the time of this writing. For more information, see https://www.linkedin.com/feed/update/urn:li:activity:7460645133072564224/

Also, look out for a chapter financial support call coming out soon. We would like more chapters to open in more regions and see that they all get engaged in their community.

We are seeing great responses to our conferences globally from TEMSCON LATAM (June), TEMSCON Global (August), TEMSCON ASPAC (October), TEMSMET (October), and also our partner conferences. Record numbers of papers are being submitted. Very exciting!

We did a pilot for a social imperative project TRYINNOVATION™. This is about building Innovation skills in K-12 students and teachers.

We are converging on our elections of VPs of Marketing, Membership, and Technical Activities, and also the Members at Large election follows soon.

A commemorative TEMS 75 years logo is released (see below); feel free to use it. Watch for exciting 75 year celebrations to be held throughout the year, globally!

A lot of exciting things are happening at TEMS! Join us as a member and volunteer. Let us grow together. Thank you
