New in Transactions on Engineering Management, โ€œOutsourcing or Licensing? Remanufacturing Mode Selection in the Presence of Technological Innovation,โ€ by Guo Li, Jinchao Li, and Hong Zheng. This study develops a supply chain consisting of an OEM and a third-party remanufacturer (TPR) to examine how innovation decisions interact with remanufacturing mode choices.

The results show that the optimal remanufacturing strategy evolves from no remanufacturing to partial and ultimately full remanufacturing. Managers of OEMs should closely monitor production costs and market demands, and adjust their remanufacturing strategies dynamically under the outsourcing and licensing modes. Regarding technological innovation, managers of OEMs should increase innovation investment when competition between new and remanufactured products is relatively balanced. The results further indicate that the outsourcing mode induces higher technological innovation when the new-product production cost is moderate. Finally, the OEMsโ€™ remanufacturing mode choice is jointly determined by consumersโ€™ valuation of remanufactured products and the new-product production cost. When consumer valuation is low, the licensing mode becomes the exclusive optimal choice.

The latest update from TEMS President, Dr Sudeendra Koushik...

Warm greetings to all my TEMS colleagues. As you all know, TEMS is in its glory days in its 75th year! Guided by our 2x2 (Two by Two) vision, TEMS is well and truly on its way to doubling our Society membership in two years. We have increased the Society membership by about 30 percent since March 2026. Thanks to all the engagement and visibility of TEMS, we are creating wonderful momentum.

Our VP elections are in process and will be followed by the Board of Governors election. The board has approved the Gus Gaynor Outstanding Volunteer Award to recognise significant contributions by our volunteers at TEMS. The formal approval process has been initiated.

Our TEMS Radio team has launched a unique reverse broadcast challenge where I will, as President of the Society, run reverse podcasts in which I interview our volunteers.

TEMS 75-year celebrations, which will take place throughout the year, are being planned by a special committee. A special initiative has been launched to collect pictures for this, and I invite you to share any of your TEMS pictures here: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSeNXtZj7AT88pKH7pxMufPk366ZfGAtZg1VCH0n7GtLVStnWQ/viewform

The new Students Branch Funding call has been distributed and has received many competitive applications. The results will soon be announced by the Membership team.

We are working on expanding our footprint across Africa and South Asia. Any volunteers in this region are welcome to join us in this endeavour.

We have TEMSCON Global, IEEE TEMSCON ASPAC, IEEE TEMSCON LATAM, TEMSMET, and many more conferences in the coming months. Looking forward to seeing you in various TEMS activities. Join us and let us grow together. Thank you.

New in TEMS Leadership BRIEFS, โ€œBeyond the Dashboard: How Senior Leaders Can Stay Technically Deep on High-Scale Systems,โ€ by Priyank Desai. The author challenges the common drift of senior engineering leaders away from technical depth, arguing that system architecture remains a critical strategic asset.

This Leadership BRIEF outlines practical habits, such as engaging in architecture reviews, participating in incidents, and linking technical priorities to business goals, that help leaders stay meaningfully connected to complex systems. By maintaining this balance, leaders can improve decision quality, strengthen alignment with teams, and ensure long-term system resilience without slipping into micromanagement.
