Alcoa is investing $65 million to expand its casthouse operations in Mosjøen, Norway (Alcoa Norge) -strengthening the ability to deliver low‑carbon aluminum products in a key European market.

The investment will introduce recycled content into the casting process for the first time at the plant, while increasing production capacity by up to 75,000 metric tons and expanding the range of products and alloys available to customers. This supports evolving demand in key sectors such as automotive and packaging.

“This investment places Alcoa at the forefront of delivering low-carbon aluminum while creating long-term value for our customers and shareholders," said Alcoa President and CEO, Bill Oplinger. “The increased capacity, combined with recycling capabilities, positions Mosjøen as a cornerstone of low-carbon aluminum supply across Europe.”

The project will be delivered in phases, with commissioning and ramp‑up progressing through 2028.

Alcoa’s EcoLum®: Now Even Lower Carbon

We’ve achieved at least a 10% reduction in the cradle-to-gate carbon footprint across most of our EcoLum® aluminum portfolio, based on updated and third-party verified Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs).

This progress reflects continued improvements across our operations and supply chain — and reinforces how we are advancing lower-carbon aluminum solutions to support our customers’ decarbonization goals.

As we continue to evolve our Sustana® product portfolio, we remain focused on delivering measurable, transparent progress.

This week marks 137 years since Charles Martin Hall was granted a U.S. patent for a process that would change aluminum forever. These images help tell that story.

(Image 1) Charles Martin Hall himself. He was only 22 years old when he cracked the problem that had stumped scientists around the world. His breakthrough led to the founding of Alcoa and helped turn aluminum into the versatile, essential material it is today.

(Image 2) The woodshed where Hall tested his ideas. It was persistence, problem solving and countless experiments in an unassuming workspace that would eventually give rise to an entirely new industry.

(Image 3) A collection of aluminum samples produced during Hall’s early experiments. Different sizes. Different shapes. Each one is the result of trial, error and refinement. Together, they show progress happening in real time, proof that aluminum didn’t have to be rare.

(Image 4) Hall’s original U.S. patent. The idea captured here, reducing aluminum from its fluoride salts using electricity, became what we now know as the Hall-Héroult process. It’s still the backbone of aluminum production more than a century later.

137 years later, Aluminum continues to shape how we build, move and innovate.
