We want to extend our heartfelt condolences to the employees, families, friends, and community members affected by the tragic incident at the Nippon Dynawave Packaging facility.

Our thoughts are with everyone impacted, and we are especially grateful for the emergency responders and teams supporting ongoing rescue efforts. The forest products industry is grounded in close-knit communities and shared connections, and moments like this are felt deeply by all of us.

Across the rural West, forestry continues to provide family wage jobs in logging, trucking, sawmills, manufacturing, and forest management. These are the jobs that keep small towns working, support local businesses, and help families stay in the communities they call home.

Member Profile: Along the Columbia River in Kalama, Washington, RSG Forest Products continues a manufacturing legacy that started more than 50 years ago with a single sawmill in Mist, Oregon.

Today, RSG has grown into one of the Pacific Northwest’s largest lumber producers with operations across Oregon and Washington. The company still remains family owned and committed to the values it was built on in 1971.

Mills like this help keep working forests working while supporting skilled trades, family wage jobs, and rural communities across the region.

The Sequim Library and Forks’ Spartan Stadium have something in common: both were built with timber revenue generated from Washington state trust lands.

On a recent trip through the Olympic Peninsula, AFRC’s Matt Comisky joined the Clallam County Revenue Advisory Committee and along with Nick Smith met with local beneficiaries who depend on sustainable timber harvests to support schools, libraries, and community services.

These working forests continue to deliver real value for rural Washington communities. More stories like these coming soon!

The U.S. lumber industry supports more than 750,000 jobs and helps build the homes, products, and communities Americans rely on every day.

This is an Inventoried Roadless Area. “Protected” from active management. Then wildfire came.

Millions of acres of roadless forests have burned since 2001. Nearly half are now at high or very high wildfire risk.

If this is what protection looks like, what is actually protecting our forests?
