Printing and Light

Just a quick taste of color theory here…

Subtractive color theory is what we use when printing, painting, etc. It starts with white paper and as we add pigment or paint, those colors absorb light and subtract from the wavelength that returns to our eyeballs creating the colors we see!

Check it out! Fun stuff!

Should I get my art scanned? Why I say no! Get it photographed if you can!

Photographing art gives me much more control over the lighting and the ability to handle icky reflections caused by glossy sheens. This is especially necessary if the sheen isnt totally even throughout the piece. Many artists prefer to varnish their pieces pre digitization as the varnish can drastically affect the vibrance and saturation of the colors. If they choose a glossier varnish, this can cause issues when scanning.

Cardstock in an inkjet printer is a big fat NO NO.
Inkjet printers need inkjet coated media. That’s why it’s so much more expensive!

Thanks for tagging along!

Reason your colors are off #2!

CMYK is not for fine art printing. Honestly I’m getting tired of saying this but it seems like everyday someone reaches out because their art printing person is asking for CMYK pdf files 🤪

#3 Media!

If you are printing to matte paper and your software and printer think you are printing to satin canvas things will be off! Not insanely, but yeah off. So dont do that! Get it right!

Number two is next! What will it be oh my?!

#4 ICC Profiles!

These are files provided by your paper manufacturer that tell your printer what things should look like. They are created by printing a chart, then scanning thousands of patches and the software can use those scans to tweak everything so they produce the correct colors! It’s like magic but not!

And just for transparency, Im not cutting these video into parts to be obnoxious. IG’s algorithm won’t push them to many people if they are more than a minute long (due to the ever shortening attention span) so you likely wouldn’t get any of this info if I made a three minute video! Yes! Gotta be smarter than the bots!

Number three is next! What will it be oh my?!

The Top 5 Reasons Your Colors Are Off When Printing At Home!

This is way too much info for one video. If you are doing your own art prints and cant get your colors right, this is what I find to be the 5 most common causes!

Number 5!

AirPrint driver is installed! Yuck! Check you printer settings on your Mac and make sure you have not installed the AirPrint driver via Bonjour. It’s not good for printing art! Check and make sure it’s not installed and if it is delete and start again using the OEM driver!

Number 4 comes later this week! What will it be?!?!

Now how do you soft proof if you don’t want to pay for an expensive Photoshop subscription?!

A tool typically used for photographers to check how print gamuts will affect their photographs when printed, this can be a really useful tool to check what colors in your RGB file are out of gamut when printing with a standard CMYK gamut when doing postcards, flyers, or other things typically printed in CMYK (unlike photos and art).

is an awesome app that is now available for free.
