🚨 SCAM ALERT: Yavapai County Woman Loses $4.3 Million

A recent case reported by the Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office is a devastating reminder of just how sophisticated today’s scams can be.

A Verde Valley woman in her 50s reportedly lost $4.3 million after scammers spent nearly two months posing as FBI agents and New York police officers. The criminals used spoofed phone numbers, emails, fake official-looking documents and online meetings to convince her that she was involved in a federal money-laundering investigation.

They pressured her to keep the situation secret and ultimately instructed her to transfer money through cryptocurrency to supposedly prove her innocence.

This can happen to anyone. Scammers create fear, urgency and isolation to keep victims from stopping long enough to question what they’re being told.

Remember:

* Law enforcement will not call and demand payment to avoid arrest or clear your name.
* Never send cryptocurrency, gift cards or money because of a threatening phone call, text or email.
* Don’t trust caller ID. Phone numbers can be spoofed.
* If someone claims to represent law enforcement or another government agency, hang up and contact that agency directly using a phone number you independently verify.
* Talk to someone you trust before making a large or unusual financial transaction.

And please report scams, even if you didn’t lose money.

BBB Scam Tracker is a free tool that allows consumers to report scams and search reports submitted by others. Those reports help BBB identify trends, educate communities and warn others about emerging schemes.

The more we share information about scams, the harder we make it for scammers to find their next victim.

We held our very first BBB University at the Prescott Campus—and what a fantastic way to kick things off!

A huge thank-you to our incredible team:

✨ Sarah—Queen of goodie bags, space management, and campus tours (she truly made everything run seamlessly and set the tone for a welcoming experience)

✨ Stephanie—our Accreditation Specialist and expert presenter (she brought the knowledge, clarity, and confidence that really resonated with attendees)

✨ Natalie—our sales specialist and closer (she connected the dots and helped turn interest into real excitement about accreditation)

The majority of non-accredited attendees walked away energized and genuinely excited about the possibility of becoming BBB Accredited—along with a deeper understanding of the benefits, resources, and opportunities available to them.

And me? I’m beyond grateful for this powerhouse team and so excited to keep building momentum as we spread the word about BBB benefits and upcoming events throughout Northern Arizona.

This is just the beginning! 💙

This morning was a great reminder of why I love being part of Northern Arizona’s business community.

It was a pleasure to meet Arizona Secretary of State Adrian Fontes at the SBDC Mobile Business Meetup and hear his encouragement for entrepreneurs and small businesses across our state.

A special shoutout to the outstanding local business panel that I’m honored to know and work alongside:
✨ Amanda Voss, YES!
✨ Jen & Jeff Herbert,
Superstition Meadery
✨ Lucy Leyva, Maid to Order

Each of them shared valuable insights, real-world experiences, and a passion for helping Arizona businesses thrive.

Thank you as well to Marie, Danusia, and the incredible team at the Arizona SBDC for bringing this event to Prescott, and to the Prescott Chamber of Commerce for helping support opportunities that connect, educate, and strengthen our business community.

One thing I was reminded of today is that business isn’t about politics—it’s about community. No matter our backgrounds or viewpoints, supporting local businesses, creating opportunities, solving problems, and helping entrepreneurs succeed are goals that bring us together. Strong businesses create strong communities, and that’s something we can all rally behind.

As someone who works every day with businesses across Northern Arizona through the Better Business Bureau, I’m grateful to be part of conversations that focus on collaboration, innovation, and the shared success of our local economy.

From Backpacks to Boardrooms: What Gen X Learned About Working Together

There I was—backpack slung over one shoulder, heading into a new chapter with no idea what the future would hold.

Now, as a proud member of Gen X, I find myself working alongside colleagues from five different generations. And honestly? It’s one of the greatest strengths any organization can have.

Every generation brings something valuable to the table:

* Traditionalists remind us of commitment, resilience, and institutional knowledge.
* Baby Boomers demonstrate leadership built on relationships and experience.
* Gen X often serves as the bridge—comfortable with change, independent, and able to translate between analog beginnings and digital transformation.
* Millennials challenge us to rethink collaboration, purpose, and flexibility.
* Gen Z pushes innovation, embraces technology naturally, and isn’t afraid to ask, “Why have we always done it this way?”

The best workplaces aren’t the ones where everyone thinks alike. They’re the ones where different generations are willing to learn from one another.

As leaders, our job isn’t to compare generations—it’s to create environments where every generation feels heard, respected, and empowered to contribute.

Looking back at this photo, I couldn’t have imagined podcast studios, AI, remote work, or collaborating with colleagues decades older and younger than me. But I’m grateful for every perspective that’s shaped the way I lead today.

What’s one lesson you’ve learned from someone in a different generation than your own?

One year ago, I began an incredible journey with the Better Business Bureau serving Northern Arizona. Looking back, I'm grateful for everything we've accomplished together.

This past year has been about so much more than running a campus—it's been about building trust, creating connections, and strengthening our business community.

Some highlights from year one:
• 🎙️ 53 podcasts recorded featuring local businesses and community leaders
• 🤝 46 community events attended
• 🚶 239 consumer walk-ins served
• 👥 328+ conference room attendees
• 📰 16 media mentions promoting trust and consumer awareness
• 📅 19 conference room bookings that brought organizations together

Beyond the numbers, I'm proud of the relationships we've built with organizations like SCORE, SBDC, Moonshot AZ, local Chambers of Commerce, nonprofits, and so many incredible Accredited Businesses across Northern Arizona. Together, we've worked to make the Prescott BBB Campus a welcoming hub for education, collaboration, and ethical business practices.

None of this would have been possible without an amazing team, supportive leadership, dedicated community partners, and the businesses that believe in the BBB mission. Thank you for trusting me, collaborating with me, and helping create meaningful opportunities for our region.

As I look ahead, I'm excited to continue expanding our impact throughout Yavapai, Coconino, Navajo, and Apache counties—growing partnerships, increasing resources for businesses and consumers, and continuing to make the BBB the trusted resource for our communities.

Also...I asked AI to help me create a graphic to celebrate my first year. Let's just say the first version looked like a pirate's treasure map collided with a national park brochure. 😄 After a little back-and-forth, I think we landed on something that captures the journey pretty well. Sometimes AI still needs a human creative director!

Here's to year one—and to everything still to come.
