THE CORPORATE THREAT ENVIRONMENT IS CHANGING
The recent killing of a Bank of America vice president is another reminder that corporate leaders and employees are operating in an increasingly unpredictable security environment.
Not every act of violence involving an executive is targeted. Some are random. Others involve workplace disputes, personal grievances, stalking, disgruntled employees, or hostility toward a company and its leadership.
But the numbers are becoming difficult to ignore.
A global survey of more than 2,300 corporate security leaders found that 42% reported a significant increase in threats of violence against executives. Among U.S. technology companies, that number climbed to 66%.
Executive risk assessments have reportedly increased fivefold, while median executive-security spending among the largest U.S. companies increased 16% in 2024.
And we are seeing it firsthand.
At Axios Security Group, we've experienced a significant increase in requests involving hostile terminations, disgruntled employees, aggressive former employees, workplace threats, and concerns involving corporate leadership.
A termination may be an HR event at 10:00 a.m. and a security issue at 10:05 a.m.
That's why coordination between HR, legal, leadership, and security is becoming increasingly important. Threat assessment, protective intelligence, termination support, workplace security, and executive protection shouldn't begin only after a threat has already escalated.
The objective isn't to turn every difficult termination into a tactical operation.
It's to recognize when the risk profile has changed before an incident occurs.
The statistics are telling us something.
Our clients are telling us something.
And what we're seeing operationally is telling us something.
Organizations can no longer afford to treat executive protection and workplace violence as purely reactive security functions.
The time to evaluate the threat is before it reaches the front door.
