SHOP UPDATE 🩌

So Jake apparently has to always be an overachiever at everything he does 😂, and he ended up needing another hernia surgery this year.

Turns out, he actually had this hernia back in the spring but didn’t realize it at the time. After dealing with some more pain, we finally figured out what was going on and decided to go ahead with surgery now so he can be fully healed before deer season gets busy!

He had surgery yesterday, and thankfully, recovery should be shorter this time since it wasn’t an emergency situation. He’s hoping to be back in the shop by the end of the week and should be fully recovered by the end of September. Until then, Jake will be relying on some extra help from our awesome team.

🩌 For our bow hunters—
We will be accepting deer heads for caping/mounting as usual throughout bow season. However, Jake will not be available to skin deer during the first three weekends of bow season.

If you harvest a deer during the first three weekends of bow season and need it skinned, please call us first before bringing it to the shop to make arrangements.

We appreciate everyone’s patience while we get Jake healed up and ready for another busy deer and bear season! 🎯

What an incredible weekend at the North Carolina Taxidermists Association State Convention! This year was the biggest show we’ve ever had (over 200 pieces!), and so many incredible pieces there!

After many years of hard work, competing, and striving for excellence, Jake officially earned his Master Taxidermist title! 🏆đŸ’ȘđŸ»

Receiving his Award of Excellence in Lifesize officially made him just the 23rd person in the 44-year history of the North Carolina Taxidermists Association to earn the prestigious title of Master Taxidermist. To say we’re proud is an understatement!! đŸ‘đŸ»đŸ‘đŸ»

Jake also competed with a customer’s turkey and one of his own whitetail deer mounts, earning:
🏆 McKenzie’s Taxidermist Choice – Best Bird Award
🏆 NWTF Best of Show – Wild Turkey Professional Division Award
🏆 McKenzie’s Taxidermist Choice – Best Whitetail Award

We’re also incredibly proud of Brianna, who entered a hog mount in this years competition and earned:
đŸ„ˆ 2nd Place in Professional Division Gamehead
đŸ„‡ 1st Place Habitat

And then Cody decided just one week before the convention that he wanted to compete! He and Jake took the whitetail mount from our living room—that they had mounted together—and entered it in the Collective Artist Division, where they brought home an amazing 3rd Place medallion! 🩌

Cody also participated in the children’s challenge in painting a bluegill fish in 3 hrs. His team won 1st place!

Congratulations to all of this year’s competitors—we’re already looking forward to next year! We’re also incredibly thankful to our customers, family, and everyone who supports Jake Rouse Taxidermy. Here’s to continuing to raise the bar!

A phone call yesterday afternoon turned into an early morning trip to Virginia today.

We were contacted to prepare and transport a beautiful Longhorn back to our shop, to be mounted.

We’re looking forward to bringing this Longhorn back to life and creating a display its owner will enjoy for years to come.

North Carolina might be the best state in America for a record-book black bear. Hyde County alone, a coastal speck with fewer than 5,000 residents, has produced 58 entries since 1986.

If you think North Carolina is just a bass fishing state, the bears would like a word.

From the Blue Ridge to the coastal swamps, the Tar Heel State quietly produces quality whitetails and bruiser black bears that rival anything in the Southeast. The mountains offer a completely different hunt than the flatlands, and both regions are putting animals in the books.

North Carolina's big game records tell a story most hunters outside the state haven't heard yet.
