North Texas Giving Day is almost here, and it is one of our favorite days on the local calendar.

On Thursday, September 17, our region comes together for the largest community giving event in the country. Last year, more than 100,000 donors gave $78 million to local nonprofits, and every dollar goes straight to the causes people choose. Early giving is already open, so you do not have to wait until the 17th to take part.

For us, this day is a chance to rally behind the organizations that make North Texas stronger all year long. There are more than 3,000 worthy nonprofits taking part.

Here is our encouragement for the week: pick a cause that matters to you and plan to give a little on the 17th. Even a small gift adds up fast when a whole region shows up together.🧡

Community looks like a room full of nonprofit leaders talking honestly about protecting the people they serve.

Greg Murff and Stacy Baker joined a roundtable at Harmony Bank in Garland this week for a discussion on cybersecurity risk facing nonprofits. Sherry Stallone-DeMent brought the group together and invited our team to take part.

Nonprofits hold donor records, payment details, and client information that would be treated as sensitive at any company, and many are protecting all of it with a small team and a budget that already has to stretch.

The encouraging part is that the steps that help most are usually not the expensive ones:

• Multifactor authentication on email and anything that touches money
• A rule that any change to payment details gets verified by phone, using a number you already had on file
• A short list of who to call, and in what order, when something looks wrong

Here is a security gap that rarely gets attention because no hacker is involved: former employees who still have access after they leave.

It happens more than most owners realize. One survey of IT decision-makers found that at half of companies, a departing employee's accounts stay active for longer than a day past their last one (OneLogin survey of 500 IT decision-makers). Usually it is not about bad intentions. Someone forgets to switch off an old login, a shared password never gets changed, or an app nobody remembers still has the door open.

The reassuring part is that this is one of the most fixable gaps there is. A simple offboarding routine takes care of it: a clear list of every account and tool a person can reach, an owner for who shuts each one off, and a quick confirmation that it is done on their last day.

There is a nice bonus too. Closing out unused accounts often means you stop paying for software seats no one is using, and it keeps you on the right side of the compliance and insurance rules that expect a documented process.

If your business carries cyber insurance, or plans to, here is something worth knowing before your next renewal: the application has quietly turned into a security audit.

Insurers have tightened up considerably. Most now ask for proof of specific protections before they will write or renew a policy, including multi-factor authentication on email and remote access, modern endpoint protection, tested backups, and annual security training for staff.

Here is the part that catches owners off guard. Answering "yes" to a control that is only partly in place can come back around later. Coalition's cyber claims data found that 82% of denied claims involved businesses that did not have multi-factor authentication fully in place. In other words, the policy was there, yet a gap in the actual protection surfaced only when a claim was filed.

The reassuring news is that this is very fixable, and the same steps that satisfy an insurer are the ones that keep your business safe in the first place. Getting them documented and switched on everywhere they belong is most of the work.

One of the most anticipated video games in years is almost here, and scammers are already using the excitement as bait.

This week, security researchers spotted fake "early access" downloads for Grand Theft Auto VI making the rounds, promising a sneak peek and delivering malware instead. It is a classic move.

Whenever something has a lot of buzz, whether a big game release or a huge sale, attackers know people tend to click first and ask questions later.

The lesson carries straight into the workplace. The same trick shows up as a fake software update, a too-good-to-be-true invoice, or a "free" download an employee grabs on a work laptop. Excitement and urgency are the hook every time.

A good habit for any team is simple: pull software and files only from official sources, and when something feels too exciting to be true, slow down for a second and check.

This Thursday, August 20, the National Institute of Standards and Technology is hosting a virtual session called Back to Basics: Foundational Cybersecurity Practices for Small Businesses (NIST, 2026). It is aimed squarely at smaller teams that want to protect themselves well without a big budget or a full IT department.

We love seeing resources like this, because it echoes something we tell clients all the time. Strong security is mostly about doing the fundamentals consistently. Advanced tools have their place, and the real protection comes from getting the basics working reliably, day in and day out.

Today is National Nonprofit Day, and it is one of our favorite reasons to pause and say thank you.

Across North Texas, nonprofits do the quiet, essential work that holds a community together. They feed families, mentor kids, walk alongside people in recovery, and stand with neighbors on their hardest days. We are grateful to know and support several of them, each doing remarkable work right here in our metroplex.

We have always believed a business should be woven into its community and invested in its wellbeing. When local organizations thrive, families are steadier, neighborhoods are stronger, and every business in the area feels the benefit.
