74% of Americans have at least one financial regret.
The top one (by a wide margin) is not saving for retirement early enough. Second is carrying too much credit card debt. Third is not having enough set aside for emergencies.
According to Bankrate's 2025 Financial Regrets Survey, Gen Xers are the most likely of any generation to have a financial regret (83%). The percentage of people who carry this retirement savings regret grows with age — which means the longer it goes unaddressed, the heavier it tends to feel.
Here's the thing about financial regrets: almost none of them are surprising in hindsight. Most people could see them coming. The gap isn't knowledge... it's having a clear plan and someone to help you act on it.
The good news is that every single one of the top regrets is addressable before it becomes permanent.
💰 Not saving early enough for retirement: that window is still open, and contributions made in your 40s and 50s still have meaningful time to grow.
💳 Too much credit card debt: there are strategies to tackle it systematically without derailing everything else.
🏥 Not enough in emergency savings: even small, consistent progress builds a cushion that changes how the rest of your financial life feels.
You don't have to fix everything at once. You just have to start, ideally with someone who can help you figure out where starting will make the biggest difference for your specific situation.
