Trucking fleets need to be aware that actions by the President or some Governors do not override laws in Virginia and other states where on-highway use of dyed diesel is still illegal. There are also tax and record keeping implications for compliance with IFTA.

Governors across the country are temporarily easing dyed diesel restrictions and suspending fuel taxes as diesel prices remain elevated over year-ago levels.

Attention I-64 travelers: Critical roadway repaving at the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel begins THIS weekend.

A series of full weekend directional closures is planned at the HRBT for repaving. Only one direction will be closed at a time, with closures scheduled from 9 p.m. Friday through 5 a.m. Monday.

🛑 Westbound toward Hampton: Oct. 2–5 and Oct. 9–12*
🛑 Eastbound toward Norfolk: Oct. 16–19 and Oct. 30–Nov. 2*

*A second closure weekend will be used if needed to complete any remaining work in that direction.

Before traveling, motorists should check 511.VDOT.Virginia.gov traffic information. Third-party navigation apps such as Google Maps, Apple Maps and Waze may not reflect the most up-to-date closure information.

Heads up, Interstate 81 travelers! Motorists should expect significant delays on southbound I-81 in the Strasburg area starting at 10 p.m. Friday night, October 2, and continuing through at least late Saturday night, October 3.

During this time, southbound traffic will be limited to just the left lane. The right lane closure is for pavement work and barrier relocation in preparation for a traffic shift related to the ongoing interstate widening project.

The southbound lane closure will impact the area between the Interstate 66 off-ramp at Exit 300 and the Strasburg Exit 298. The southbound Exit 298 off-ramp to Route 11 will be closed to traffic during the weekend roadwork with a detour available at Exit 296.

As an alternate route, I-81 southbound drivers may consider using Exit 302 to access Route 11 before returning to the interstate at Exit 298. Westbound I-66 traffic traffic merging to I-81 southbound should also consider alternate routes to avoid congestion.

All work is weather permitting, and schedules are subject to change.

To close out this National Truck Driver Appreciation Week, the Virgina Trucking Associations teamed up with the Virginia State Police and the American Trucking Associations at the Ladysmith Welcome Center in Ruther Glen to thank the men and women out on the road that day that were keeping America moving.

The drivers we were fortunate to meet this week were all cut of the same cloth: hardworking, humble individuals that believe in service more than self. No bragging or egos or thoughts of promotion. Just good salt of the earth folks that want to get the job done and get home safely. They deserve our gratitude every single day.

To every driver out there: thank you for your dedication, your long hours, and your commitment to keeping our economy running.
