Please pay attention to this special traffic alert regarding delays caused by oversize load traveling north through Virginia on Wednesday night into Thursday morning.

TRAFFIC ALERT!

August 26:Motorists should expect slow moving traffic, which is expected to cause significant travel delays, between 7 p.m. Aug. 26 and 5 a.m. Aug. 27 on I-77 north, I-81 north, I-66 east and I-495 north for a scheduled oversize load traveling north from North Carolina through Virginia to Maryland.

The oversize load will take up more than two lanes of traffic, which is expected to cause significant travel delays. As part of the approved route, there will be multiple planned pull-off locations to allow traffic to pass. Drivers are encouraged to avoid these routes overnight and check 511 ahead of necessary travel to avoid delays.

Virginia State Police will be supporting the transport by escorting the vehicle, and tow partners will be available to assist as needed.

The Virginia Trucking Association would like to wish everyone a Happy and Safe 4th of July!

We want to encourage all Virginians to make safety a priority as they celebrate our nation's founding this July 4th weekend. As the celebrations begin, we ask that you:

* Plan ahead and designate a sober driver to get you home safely
* Use a taxi, rideshare, or public transportation system if drinking
* Honor your commitment to stay sober if you agree to serve as the designated driver
* Contact local law enforcement if you notice an impaired driver on the road
* Prevent and protect others from driving after drinking

If available in your area, utilize a "Sober Ride Program" like:

* Washington Regional Alcohol Program’s SoberRide that provides residents of Northern Virginia with a free Lyft ride home for up to $15.
* Hampton Roads - Drive Safe 757 Sober Ride program that assists Hampton Roads residents in getting home safely during major holidays.
* Richmond, where drivers traveling to or from Chesterfield County for celebrations for the 4th of July can take advantage of a free/discounted Uber or Lyft ride thanks to Chesterfield SAFE. For more information on how to receive and use a code, visit Chesterfieldsafe.org.
